The Last Run

by Meghann on January 8, 2010

This morning was my final training run before the marathon on Sunday.

I did a whopping 3 miles at an 8:45-ish pace. This was about 30 seconds below my goal pace. I wanted to aim a little faster, but I didn’t want to overwork myself in the process.

I knew I would be running around like a chicken with their head cut off this morning, so I went ahead and prepped a lovely breakfast last night.

Overnight oats

  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats
  • Plain Yogurt (The rest of a container, maybe 3/4 cup?)
  • Cinnamon
  • Almond Butter
  • Raisins

I combined everything last night and this morning finished it off with some pear, Crofter’s Europe Superfruit Spread, and some granola for a little crunch.

The cold breakfast was enjoyed with a hot cup of water.

I has a comment yesterday asking about my hot water.

I try to hydrate in the mornings with a glass of water, but when its cold outside the idea of cold water is not appealing. Instead I opt for a cup of hot water that hydrates me while warming my body up for a run.

I prefer not to drink tea before my runs because tea seems to mess with my stomach a tiny bit and I hate having to pull over into my neighbor’s bushes to alleviate that problem on a daily basis. Luckily, the hot water doesn’t give me the same problems. 🙂

Did you know in exactly 1 month I will be 25?!?! Sunday’s race will be my last race in the 24 and under age division. 🙁 It’s been a good run age division, but I guess its time for a change!

Your dinner looks so yummy Meghann :). LOVE hush puppies!! Your weekend sounds like a whirlwind, but so fun–can’t wait to hear about the marathon recap!

4 Heather January 8, 2010 at 10:29 am

You’re gonna be running fast on Sunday!! I hated leaving the under 24 age group 🙁

5 Britt @ Runnerbelle January 8, 2010 at 10:29 am

Best wishes on Sunday!!! It can be hard to change age groups at times…. I know the 30-39 group in my area is highly competitive, as is the 40’s too!

6 katiek January 8, 2010 at 10:30 am

Ive been following your blog for about a year and a half now and just wanted to wish you the best of luck on Sunday! Ironically I am in Cocoa Beach now with the swim team I coach from PA. I would love to come to the meet up or watch the race but can’t- so have fun and best of luck! PS my 25th bday is on Feb. 22, not too far behind ya!

7 Tami January 8, 2010 at 10:31 am

i have been leaving a glass pitcher out on the counter lately full of water, i am finding i do not like cold water at all…the room temperature is so much easier for me to drink. good luck sunday

8 Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 8, 2010 at 10:34 am

Don’t worry 25’s not too bad 😉

9 Whitney @ Lettuce Love January 8, 2010 at 10:38 am

Good luck! I drink hot water too — my roommate thinks it is insane 😉

10 foodfitnessandfreya January 8, 2010 at 10:38 am

All the best on Sunday, you’re going to be ace!! I like hot water too, with a tiny squeeze of agave nectar and a bit of lemon, it’s delicious!! Have a great day 🙂

11 nutritionbyeve January 8, 2010 at 10:40 am

Good luck with the race! I’m sure you will do very well. I wish I was in Florida now – the NY winter is getting the best of me (even though I know it’s cold there too). I enjoy hot water with lemon squeezed in it.

12 Mellissa January 8, 2010 at 10:41 am

My birthday is February 8th too! And I will be 29 🙂

13 eaternotarunner January 8, 2010 at 10:43 am

Good luck, Disney Princess! Enjoy your race and the festivities. 🙂

15 megan January 8, 2010 at 10:49 am

that’s funny about the hot water. i can never seem to drink just plain hot water. I do have a cup of tea every morning to warm up though

16 MelissaNibbles January 8, 2010 at 10:54 am

Good luck this weekend and have fun!

17 abbynormally January 8, 2010 at 10:55 am

I drink hot water too! People look at me like I’m crazy! And I drink coffee before runs because it cleans me out. I like feeling light-weight on my runs! 🙂

GOOD LUCK ON SUNDAY!!!!!!

18 Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 8, 2010 at 10:56 am

Can’t wait to see how you do… I predict awesomeness.

20 Erin January 8, 2010 at 11:11 am

I haven’t made overnight oats in too long — need to get on that!

21 Marissa & Mackenzie January 8, 2010 at 11:12 am

HA! I have the same bowl as you, got to keep it as festive as possible 🙂
Good luck on racing with the big girls, I know you’ll beast mode it like it seems that you have in your younger age division!

22 Heather @ The Joyful Kitchen January 8, 2010 at 11:43 am

I love tea, but I have to do herbal in the AM otherwise I have the same issue as you 🙂

I’m so excited for your race tomorrow! Can’t wait to read what you post when you’re done 🙂

23 Morgan January 8, 2010 at 11:46 am

happy friday and happy last run and good luck this weekend!

27 Christy January 8, 2010 at 12:21 pm

haha, I’ve wondered about the hot water! Makes sense now 😀

28 Courtney January 8, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Good idea with the hot water! Now I know why some runners take TP with them on their long runs. I know- it took me a long time to figure this out. Even on my longest runs – 10 miles, this hasn’t happened yet 😉

29 meyergirl January 8, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Maybe competing in the next age bracket will give you some new goals to work for! 🙂

30 Sarah (from See Sarah Eat) January 8, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I love doing hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice in it 🙂 Good luck on Sunday. Ha ha, welcome to my division!! My half marathon in April will be my last at age 27, I’m hitting the big 28 this year.

31 Amanda January 8, 2010 at 12:42 pm

25 is a great age- you will love it! Good luck this weekend!

32 Ali January 8, 2010 at 12:46 pm

I love the overnight oats! Good Luck with your weekend to-do list oh and the marathon!

33 Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) January 8, 2010 at 12:57 pm

hot tea sometimes bothers me like that too. I’ll have to try your hot water trick!

34 Laura Georgina January 8, 2010 at 1:14 pm

What a busy weekend to go with your marathon… You are going to have a blast and it will all be worth it!

I would love to drink hot water, but just can’t do it–it makes me gag something terrible, even when I put a slice of lemon in it.

35 caitsplate January 8, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I WILL BE 25 IN EXACTLY ONE MONTH TOO!! We have the same birthday?!?! So awesome!

I will be running my first race in the 25+ division in March. A half marathon – I’m so nervous!!

36 caitsplate January 8, 2010 at 1:26 pm

PS – I made your pumpkin turkey meatballs the other night. HOLY YUM!! Your blog is like a never ending source of recipes for me 🙂

37 Chelsea January 8, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Hot water also hydrates you faster! It takes less for your body to process it and it gets to where it needs to be more quickly.

You’re going to do SO great on Sunday!!!

And? I made it to the PO today. Look for a package on Monday.

38 Heather @ (The Single Dish) January 8, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Good luck! You will be great. You are inspiring me to make fish, I never make it and should start. Thanks!

39 erika January 8, 2010 at 3:25 pm

40 Abby Flabs January 8, 2010 at 4:26 pm
