A Beautiful Halloween Day

by Meghann on October 31, 2009

It wasn’t too long after I posted this morning that hunger hit me like a truck!

Derek and I were both craving old fashion deli sandwiches for lunch. I really wanted a nice turkey sandwich and took the opportunity to try a deli in Winter Park that always has a long wait at the counter – a sure sign this place is good!

Brandywine’s Delicatessen was all about the basics – no fancy deli stuff here. Once you make your way to the counter you choose the bread, meat, cheese and toppings then they prepare the sandwich fresh while you pay. There was a lovely selection of side salads available too, but I thought the sandwich would be large enough to fill my hunger.

I chose a simple Oven Roasted Turkey on Pumpernickle with all the toppings – hold the cheese.

My sandwich was piled high with Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles, Olives, Roasted Red Peppers, Banana Peppers and Deli Mustard. Yum! The only thing that would have made this better would be if they toasted the bread or pressed it.

Instead of chips I opted for a double order of pickles. I love my pickles!

I cleaned my plate. I needed all that great protein and carbs after my run this morning.

When I purchased my lunch there was a candy jar at the register. I couldn’t resist a Kit Kat to end my meal with.

IMG_4886.JPG

P.S. Kit Kats & Reeses are my favorite candies of all time!! You know in case you were curious. ;)

After lunch we walked around Park Ave where a bunch of little kids were going from store to store collecting candy. They were all so cute, I just wish I could have snap a few photos with out any parents giving me funny looks.

Instead Derek did a cute shot of Maddie and I on our stroll.

We then got the bright idea to walk the 2.5 mile loop around Lake Baldwin.

Halfway through it occurred to me that a leisurely 2.5 mile walk the same day as a 16 mile run wasn’t the brightest idea I’ve ever had. My legs were starting to yell at me!

We managed to take a break at the dog park about 3/4 of the way around. Despite just walking 2 miles Maddie had no problems showing all the dogs who was boss.

All the walking left me hungry again. As soon as I walked in the door I had a small bowl of Dried Fruit, PB Pretzels, and PB Puffins to hold me over until dinner.

For being such a great girl today Maddie earned her own Halloween Treat from the dog store.

We wore her out. She won’t budge from the couch. lol

IMG_4910.JPG

This was actually our goal. Poor Maddie will be in her crate all evening. Derek and I are heading to a Halloween Party and we wanted to leave her nice and tired so she wouldn’t be too upset at us.

Speaking of Halloween, its time to get my hair did and transform myself into a pretty, pretty princess. :) I LOVE playing dress up! Its my favorite game, which is probably why I love Halloween so much. :)

You can check out last year’s Halloween Adventure on this post and for a recap of costumes from Halloween’s past head to this post.

Don’t wait up – its going to be a late night!

Happy Halloween!!

p.s. Don’t forget to set your clocks back tonight!

16 Halloween Miles

by Meghann on October 31, 2009

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Its so strange to have Halloween fall on a Saturday this year. I believe Halloween works best on Friday nights. That way you get to join in the Halloween spirit at work/ school and continue it into the evening. ;)

My Halloween began this year with an early morning 16 mile run with my sister and her friend Jenny. We have plans to celebrate Halloween tonight and decided to switch our long run days this week in order to enjoy the festivities and not have to worry about an early morning wake up call the day after.

Before I headed out I made myself an Almond Butter, Pumpkin Butter, & Dark Chocolate Chip Sandwich.

IMG_4859.JPG

This is officially my new favorite pre-run snack. It’s filling and chock full of protein, carbs and sugars to push me through.

IMG_4861.JPG

I met Kelly and Jenny at their apartment complex and we headed out for a nice 16 mile loop in the surrounding area. We kept a steady pace of about 10:30 per mile and went nice and easy. This was Jenny’s first time doing a big loop and she did great stepping outside of her comfort zone.

At the half way point we stopped at a Publix to refill our water packs and use the restrooms. I was able to get a good stretch and refueled with 3 Strawberry Clif Shot Blocks.

After stopping the second half of the run seemed harder and longer than the first. I’m really not sure how much I enjoy taking such long breaks in long runs, but I know some people need them.

Towards the end of the run Kelly and I were getting the ‘we just want this run to be over’ mentality and pulled ahead of Jenny. I believe out last mile split was faster than any mile before it. ;)

We overestimated the distance and ended up stopping at 16 miles, but still had to walk another 3/4 miles back to the apartment. The extra walking was a great cool down that loosened my legs up and got my heart rate down.

Congrats to Kelly who earned a new PDR this morning!

As predicted I was ready to eat my arm off when the run was over. Good thing I had planned ahead and had a few Nature Valley Nut Clusters to hold me over on the drive home.

When I made it back to the apartment I immediately got to work prepping breakfast in the kitchen. I was hangry!

IMG_4869.JPG

I hope Paul didn’t mind I may have been enjoying a distant cousin of his for breakfast. ;)

I’ve seen Pumpkin Smoothies popping up on a few blogs and couldn’t wait to try one for myself.

IMG_4873.JPG

For my smoothie the following mix went into the blender:

  • 1/2 cup Pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup Fat Free Milk
  • 1 Oikos Honey Greek Yogurt
  • 1 t Pumpkin Spice
  • 1 t Cinnamon
  • 2 t Sugar
  • Ice

Yum! It tasted just like a pumpkin milkshake. I will need to make this again in the near future.

IMG_4872.JPG

With the smoothie I had a Vegan Pumpkin Raisin Scone.

IMG_4870.JPG

Pumpkin Butter was a must.

IMG_4875.JPG

Mmmm… scrumptious!

Those 16 miles wore me out! I think a low key day is in order followed by a crazy night. I love Halloween!

What are your plans for the day/ night? Are you going to dress up as anything special?

Remember to get your VOTES in through the weekend!
