The Great Pumpkin Hunt

by Meghann on October 30, 2009

I learned a very valuable lesson tonight: If you plan to carve pumpkins the night before Halloween; make sure to purchase the pumpkins ahead of time. ;)

I drove all over north Orlando earlier this evening trying to hunt down pumpkins for Derek and I to carve. Apparently finding a pumpkin on Oct. 30th is like finding a needle in a haystack!

After tying four different stores I vaguely remembered spotting a display of pumpkins at Whole Food earlier today. Derek was gracious enough to stop on his way in to town and check. he said there were 6 pumpkin left and one of them was now ours. Yay!

We named him Paul as in ‘Paul the Pumpkin’ Catchy, don’t you think?

I took the absence of pumpkins today as a sure sign that pumpkin season is rapidly coming to an end. It makes me sad.

Best to enjoy while it is still here!

Starting with 1/2 a Vegan Pumpkin Scone with a smear of Peanut Butter and Mini Chocolate Chips as an after work snack this afternoon.

Yum!

And a Pumpkin Beer while cooking dinner.

A few weeks ago I posted a stir fry on the blog that Derek went on and on about how much he wanted to eat it himself. I promised next time I cooked for him that a stir fry would be involved. The next time just happened to be tonight.

The vegetable heavy stir fry contained

  • Whole Wheat Noodles
  • Onion
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Eggplant
  • Zucchini
  • Carrot
  • Tofu
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Garlic
  • Peanut Sauce
  • Soy Sauce
  • Chopped Onions

Derek was happy as could be eating the stir fry. He has a slight obsession with noodles that rivals my pumpkin obsession. ;)

After dinner Paul came to life.

Lack of design = lack of carving skills. hehe Plus I prefer the classic pumpkin look anyways.

He’s alive! He’s alive!

We celebrated the birth of Paul with a trip to Jeremiah’s for Gelati.

Maddie had the show off her new pretty princess dress we got on clearance at PetSmart for $4.

IMG_4845.JPG

Isn’t she beautiful?!?!

IMG_4848.JPG

The first Jeremiah’s we went to was out of Pumpkin. :( I really, really wanted pumpkin, so we drove an extra 20 minutes to another Jeremiah’s on the other side of town so I could get what I wanted.

I think the girl at the window thought I was crazy when I asked if she would call the other store to see if they had pumpkin in stock or that I was willing to drive all the way over just to have it. Sometimes its worth going out of your way to get what you crave. :)

Maddie tagged along and had her traditional puppy sized ice cream.

She was the star of the show in her princess dress.

I can’t believe its almost midnight and I have to be up tomorrow at 5:30! Ooppss! I guess that means I need to get some sleep. Wish me luck on my 16 mile run in the morning; looks like I’m going to need it.

Have a Happy Halloween Everyone!

Gettin My Hair Did

by Meghann on October 30, 2009

The idea of getting my hair cut always scares me. The process of scheduling an appointment.. having to miss work.. crossing my fingers the cut comes out right.. all sort of puts me on edge.

IMG_4798

However, once I’m in the chair and someone is gently massaging my scalp all of the anxiety instantly disappears. I enter the salon feeling tense and on edge, but I leave happy and relaxed.

IMG_4799

I didn’t do anything drastic this morning, just an inch off the length and a little texturing to get rid of some bulk that was driving me crazy. (Thick hair = no bueno in extreme humidity)

I stole a Tootsie Pop from the candy stash at the reception desk on my way out and sucked on it on my way back to work.

IMG_4800

However, a slight detour was involved.

IMG_4804

Whole foods just happened to be on my way back, so I stopped and picked up some items for lunch.

IMG_4805

IMG_4808

Falafel Balls.

IMG_4806

I saw these and instantly wanted them, but did not appreciate the deep fried aspect. I put them back, but kept picking them back up and finally left with them.

IMG_4810

They were ok. I should have gone with my instinct and grabbed something else.

Stuffed Grape Leaves.

IMG_4807

These were good and I thought went well with the Falafels.

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt with Pumpkin Granola

IMG_4809

I stocked up on Pumpkin Pie Yogurt at the store and couldn’t resist including one with my lunch.

IMG_4814

I saved it for the end and ate it as a dessert. :)

Only a few more hours until my weekend begins!!! I already have a festive evening planned that includes pumpkin carving, pumpkin beer and pumpkin gelati. Do you sense a pumpkin theme in my day?

P.s. VOTE! ;)

I was very busy in the kitchen this morning.  Freshly baked homemade Vegan Pumpkin Raisin Scones – can you believe it?
