Epcot Food and Wine Festival

by Meghann on October 10, 2009

Today I encouraged my inner foodie to live out her wildest dreams by attending Epcot’s 14th Annual Food & Wine Festival.

IMG_3333.JPG

I ate, I drank and I had one amazing time! ;)

Last year was the first time I really understood the concept of what the Food & Wine Festival entails, but was unable to pull together the funds to attend. This year, however, I managed to play it smart by saving the free ticket I earned from volunteering at the Disney Marathon back in January for this very occasion.

IMG_3332.JPG

That mixed with an extra ticket Derek and I received for participating in the Race for Taste tomorrow meant this was our year to see what all the fuss was about.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the event, Epcot’s Food & WIne Festival is a food, wine and beer focused event that takes over the world showcase every October. This year 27 countries littered the area offering samples of unique food and drinks native to their country.

IMG_3338.JPG

Each country was set up in a booth and had a menu displayed out front to what they were offering.

IMG_3342.JPG

Since this was Disney, you were sure to expect a line at each booth.

IMG_3373.JPG

Needless to say this was not a cheap date by any means. Each plate was basically a sample with a couple of bites max per dish and ran anywhere between $2.50 and $5.00.

IMG_3337.JPG

To save money and our waist lines Derek and I split almost everything you see in this post. :)

Derek and I weren’t the only ones enjoying the festivities. My parents had an extra day on some some old park hopper tickets so I encouraged them to join us. This was their first Food & Wine Festival as well.

IMG_3356.JPG

We arrived at Epcot right at lunch time and were ready and willing to get the day started with some great food!

First stop: Greece.

Derek and I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki

IMG_3339.JPG

And Baklava.

IMG_3340.JPG

Yum! We were actually desperately trying to find my parents at this point and I was STARVING. We kept walking by all these great smelling booths and I was starting to complain. After seeing the greek booth I made the executive decision to stop and let them find us because I wanted food. Totally worth me putting my foot down.

It was the perfect meal to start the day. :)

IMG_3341.JPG

The next stop to catch my eyes was a beer themed booth titled The Brewer’s Collection, but it wasn’t the beer that caught my attention.

IMG_3343.JPG

It was the Pretzel!

IMG_3345.JPG

In a split second decision I ordered the Sausage as well.

IMG_3346.JPG

Pretzel + Cheese + Sausage = Good eats. Total bar food and I loved it.

Among the countries a few American cities were represented as well. My Dad would not forgive us if we didn’t stop at New Orleans.

IMG_3347.JPG

Chicken and Andoulle Gumbo

IMG_3349.JPG

Praline Bread Pudding with Bourbon Carmel Sauce

IMG_3348.JPG

Anyone else obsessed with bread pudding? My Mom referred to it as really soggy bread, but I am in love with it.

Dad and Derek chowing down.

IMG_3350.JPG

I was really looking forward to the Boston booth and it’s wide selection of Sam Adam’s beers. Every year Sam Adams brews a special Food & Wine Festival Beer that is only served at the festival. After high recommendations I ordered a small.

IMG_3352.JPG

It was ok. A little fruity for my taste. I drank about 3/4 and wouldn’t order it again.

IMG_3353.JPG

At this point we were feeling a little full and took a break from eating to ride a few rides. Derek couldn’t remember if he had actually ever been to Epcot before or not so this was his time doing all the newer rides.

IMG_3357.JPG

IMG_3390.JPG

We also checked out a couple cooking demonstrations.

IMG_3354.JPG

Sometime in there I had a glass of champagne.

IMG_3364.JPG

I couldn’t resist sampling the refreshing bubbly I saw everyone else walking around with. ;)

IMG_3365.JPG

When the skies started to turn pink we were ready and willing for round #2 of the showcase.

IMG_3385.JPG

First stop? The Desserts & Champagne booth for Strawberry Shortcake of course.

IMG_3371.JPG

Strawberry Shortcake is my favorite dessert in the whole wide world, but this was a little heavy on the cream for taste.

We headed to Buenos Aires for a Grilled Beef Skewer with Chimicurri Sauce and Boniato Puree.

IMG_3374.JPG

This was a plate we saw others eating and had to stake it out for ourselves. The flavors were great, but the meat was very tough.

At Barcelona we ordered the Taste of SpainSerrano Ham, Chorizo, Manchego Olives, & Tomato Bread.

IMG_3376.JPG

I loved this beautiful plate. So many great flavors going on here. This was one of my favorites.

I was really disappointed when nothing at the New Dahli menu struck out at me, but Bangkok did not disappoint.

Green Papaya Salad with Shrimp.

IMG_3379.JPG

The shrimp was the winner in this dish.

Just when I thought I was done and finished, Derek suggest we order one of these in Germany.

IMG_3381.JPG

How could I say no?

IMG_3382.JPG

I managed to wash it all down with a Beck’s Octoberfest.

IMG_3383.JPG

And last, but not least our Cookies & Cream Gelato from Italy to finish it all off.

IMG_3384.JPG

I think its safe to say I was stuffed to the gils at this point. No, actually I take that back. It’s true I was full, but never did I feel uncomfortably full. I only had a few bites of each plate and that mixed with all the walking allowed me to practice moderation and balance in one day.

This was a very indulgent day, but I wouldn’t go back and change a thing. I had fun and I ate a lot of good food. I couldn’t ask for anything better. :)

Tomorrow Derek and I have a very early wake up call to make it back out to Disney for our 10k. We picked up our material this morning and Derek is a little nervous about the 15 minute per mile cut off. I told him he will be fine and I will be there to make sure of it.

We are going to practice the galloway method and I plan to push him as far as he will let me to make sure he crosses that finish line.

Wish us luck!!!

A Scary Night of Fun

by Meghann on October 10, 2009

Happy (Early) Halloween from Halloween Horror Nights 2009!

IMG_3305.JPG

We were spooked, we were scared and we survived.

I believe it’s safe to say HHN this year was a success. :)

Halloween Horror Nights is a haunted, halloween themed event that Universal puts on every October. I’ve gone almost every year as far as back as I can remember. It’s really fun to see a whole different side to the park and its a nice nice break from the regular theme park protocol. (You can read last year’s adventure here)

The gates opened at 7:00, but we opted to head in a little later and stopped at the wonderful Pizza Fusion for dinner before heading in.

IMG_3279.JPG

I love this place, I just wish it wasn’t so far away.

Pizza Fusion prides itself on fresh organic ingredients and local suppliers. Even the Red Pale Ale I had last night was brewed locally at the Orlando Brewing Company. In fact the only beers they had on tap were all local!

IMG_3273.JPG

All of Pizza Fusion’s pizza choices sound delicious. I think each time I come I am going to order something different. Last time I had the Farmer’s Market and this time went with the Founder’s Pie.

IMG_3270.JPG

I asked for goat cheese instead of the trio cheese mix and added roasted eggplant. I split the large with Derek.

IMG_3275.JPG

This piece x3.

IMG_3278.JPG

As always the pizza was great. The multigrain crust was lighter then air, the topping had a little sweetness to them and the chicken tasted fresh and fabulous.

Two Thumbs Up!

On the way into Universal I was hoping to try the seasonal Pumpkin flavor at TCBY and was very disappointing when they didn’t have it. Instead I ordered a small Peanut Butter cone.

IMG_3283.JPG

The rest of the evening was a great Halloween Horror Nights adventure!

We saw a lot of Haunted Houses…

IMG_3286.JPG IMG_3296.JPG

Got Lucky with short lines…

IMG_3287.JPG

IMG_3304.JPG

And I ran into some co-workers from work…

IMG_3307.JPG

We squeezed every minute we could out of the night and didn’t end up getting home until 2:30am!! I can’t remember the last time I stay up that late.

Despite the late bed time, I still managed to get out of bed at 6:45am for my 10 miler this morning. Yes, I know I’m crazy.

On the way out the door I fueled up with a Mojo Mountain Mix Bar.

IMG_3312.JPG

Surprisingly my run wasn’t bad at all. With my lack of sleep and later then usual start I was expecting the 10 miles to be torture, but they weren’t at all. I stayed in the shade and finished 10 miles in 1:41.

In fact when I was finished I still felt wide awake and ready to conquer my day. I do fully intend it to me at full force later though. ;)

When I made it back to the apartment all I wanted was a smoothie.

IMG_3313.JPG

In the blender:

  • Ice
  • Frozen Berries
  • 1/2 packet Amazing Grass
  • 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon Chis Seeds

Perfect!

IMG_3323.JPG

IMG_3321.JPG

With the smoothie a blast from my childhood.

IMG_3319.JPG

Toast sprinkled with Cinnamon and Sugar. Sometimes you just have to eat what you crave. :)

IMG_3316.JPG

I still have a TON to do this weekend, so I better get on it!

Have a great Saturday!!!
