Bye Bye Summer Fruit

by Meghann on September 22, 2009

With the start of Fall, I have been very sad to see all of the fresh berries I enjoyed all summer slowly disappearing from the local farmer’s markets and grocery stores. Fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries have been a morning requirement for me all summer long. They will be greatly missed.

In place of my favorite berries, it has made me happy to see Oranges and Apples to start making their presence known in the market place. As one fruit departs, another genre is greatly welcomed.

I purchased my first Orange of the season over the weekend and enjoyed it this morning with a little almond butter for dipping.

My parent’s have an orange tree in their backyard that has been blossoming beautifully all summer. I can’t wait to have fresh oranges straight from their backyard!

This snack rocked, as did my lunch.

I had originally planned to enjoy my left over Lentil Sloppy Joes as a stuffing for my Acorn Squash, but that idea went out the water when my Acorn Squash became the star ingredient for my chili last night.

My Plan B was a strike of delicious brilliance: Lentil Sloppy Joes & Homemade Corn Bread!

Holy Yum! These flavors worked perfectly. I served the combination open face and savored every bite.

On the side I had grilled Okra Fries with Ketchup.

I didn’t have time to bake the Okra Fries, so 5 minutes on the George Foreman was a wonderful alternative.

Marathon Times…

I know this idea is nothing new, but its something I just discovered today.

Marathonguide.com is a site where you can search for anyone’s completed marathon time. I have been plugging in random people’s name all day to figure out what their official marathon times are. It’s an addicting site and a fun time waster. Check it out for your self.

I love berries so much, I’m going to miss them. But the good thing about frozen berries is they usually have all the nutrients

An orange tree! That is why I am envious of you Floridians. But I do have a veritable sunflower field in my backyard.

I remeber visiting my Grandparents in Florida when I was a kid and we were so excited to see real orange trees and pick oranges!

I just bought a massive bag of oranges and huge bag of apples at the market this past weekend! So glad that citrus fruit is back on my plate!

I would have never thought to put nut butters on citrus fruit. Hmm… may have to try it :)

I’m going to miss the summer berries as well! I did pick up some wonderful cara cara oranges from Wholefoods the other day. You need to try them if you haven’t before. They are sweet but tangy delicious!

I guess I thought if you lived in a warm state you’d have the same produce all year round?

I love grapefruit and oranges! :D

I know, it’s always sad when the summer fruits leave :( Now that I’ve been doing a CSA for a few months, I totally appreciate what’s in season.

Those lentil sloppy joes look AWESOME. Can’t wait to try them myself. I’ve been loving me some lentils recently. They are so versatile and perfect for fall!

Meghann,
I’m noting this not to be rude but just to bring it to your attention. You usually type parent’s for the plural and plural possessive of parent. It should be “my parents’ house” or “my parents.” Just a note. Love the blog! :)

Saying goodbye to berries has been sad for me too! They are such a staple of my summers! Time to embrace the root vegetables!

You know you live in Florida when you consider an orange a sign of fall! lol :P

I use marathonguide.com all the time to look for new races… but apparently I totally missed the runner lookup feature. Very cool. I like that they have a special column for if you BQ’d or not. :-)

That website was cool. I’d like to report that for 2008 I was the second fastest out of people with my name. :) Apparently Amy Stewart is a sloooooooooooow running name (everyone except the first one – she was smoking!). :)
