A New Breakfast Bowl

by Meghann on July 17, 2009

After drinking some seltzer water to calm my tummy down and a good night’s sleep I was up roaring and ready to go for my longer run this morning. I was itching to do some distance and planned a 7 mile run before work.

The whole 7 miles I felt great. I kept it at an easy pace and finished in 1:08:36. I just went with the flow of the morning and took the time to hash out life in my head. I always find the ‘thump, thump, thump’ of my feet on the pavement so soothing and therapeutic. If I had the time I felt I could have kept running for hours.

I am crossing my fingers I can squeeze a 10 miler in this weekend. After taking a break from the longer distances since my marathon, I forgot how much I really enjoy them and that great runner’s high I get afterwards. Even now at my work desk I feel calm, cool & collected thanks to my morning run. 🙂

I hit the bottom of my almond butter jar yesterday.

Normally this would have been a heart breaking tragedy, but ever since I saw Heather’s Almond Jar Oats the other month I have been waiting to get just the right amount to try it out my self.

Last night I made a muesli mix of

  • 1/2 cup Hot Multigrain Cereal
  • Almond Milk
  • Plain Oikos Yogurt
  • Chia Seeds
  • Dried Goji Berries
  • Crushed Almonds
  • Unsweetened Shredded Coconut

I then placed the mix in the Almond Butter Jar and let it sit over night.

I know it doesn’t necessarily look appealing, but trust me it’s good. I like my muesli extra thick, but if you prefer it thinner just add more milk.

I did add a Kiwi and some Blueberries to the mix as well. I think that helped make it prettier. 🙂

The results were amazing!! I loved scraping a little almond butter off the side of the jar with each bite. If you’re getting to a bottom of a jar I would suggest trying this out yourself.

I polished the jar off, not leaving any almond butter to waste. 🙂

Now all I need to do is restock my almond butter supply. I have a fridge full of various nut butters but there is something about my Whole Foods Chunky Roasted Almond Butter that I always gravitate too. It’s too good!

Nut butter jars make the best bowls!

Nice job on the strong seven-miler!

Yum! Yay for a great run! I’m still recovering from my 6 mile hill run on Monday morning (boo!) and think I aggrivated my ITband, so, I haven’t been able to run much this week–I’m jealous! It’s crazy how much you miss it. I’ve got a 15k tomorrow, so, I thought it best to take it easy anyway. I also LOVE Whole Foods Chunky Almond Butter–it’s probably my favorite! Although, I just discovered cashew butter–that stuff is pretty tasty too!

That is a FANTASTIC idea!

Hi Meghann,
I’m running my first 10-mile long run this sunday, and I was wondering if you have any tips. I’ve run up to 8.5 miles before, but never more than that. Help!!!! =O

If you get to a TJ’s anytime soon (p.s. there are a bunch in BOSTON!!) you should check out the sea salt almond butter. yum!

Great idea to do overnight oats in the jar!

11 ksgoodeats July 17, 2009 at 10:12 am

What a great bowl of oats! Congrats on the 7 miles 🙂

12 brandi July 17, 2009 at 10:20 am

yay for trying it! so good, right? I know you don’t make hot breakfasts very often but you should totally try either oatmeal or oatbran (hot) in a jar like that. it kind of melts the almond butter at the bottom and it’s amazing.

awesome for the bottom of the jar AB! Great 7 mile run!!

17 leslie July 17, 2009 at 11:39 am

i just did almond butter jar hot oats a few days ago, but i never thought of doing it with muesli! i LOVE this idea!

18 Julie July 17, 2009 at 11:50 am

I don’t know what it is about almond butter, but it always tastes better chunky, I can’t do smooth!

19 AshleyP July 17, 2009 at 12:03 pm

I can’t wait to try the oats in a jar!

mmm…muesli…makes me want to get another cruise!

I totally forgot about the oats in the jar idea the last time I finished some PB darnit! It’s definitely on my list of to-dos!

Your muesli looks amazing! Good luck with your runs!

I agree, running outside is a perfect time to have “me time.”

I really need to try out oats like that! Unfortunately I don’t have any jars that are almost finished 🙁

23 Tay July 17, 2009 at 12:53 pm

I tried it out the other day – delish, huh?! I know, there is just something about almond butter that you can’t beat!!

24 Danielle C. July 17, 2009 at 1:03 pm

yum yum! I’m almost to the bottom of a jar of TJ’s almond butter, I can’t wait. 🙂

25 Shannon (The Daily Balance) July 17, 2009 at 1:41 pm

GREAT idea to use the end of the jar as a bowl! Perfect way to ensure nut butter is in every bite 😉

you are a wise one!

love it 😉

7 miles is amazing, I hope to be able to run that far some day! Those oats look great, what a genius way of using every last bit of almond butter. Definitely on my list to try since one of my biggest pet peeves is letting food go to waste.

27 Niki July 17, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Great job on the 7 miler!! I love PB jar oats!! So yummy!!

28 Rebeca July 17, 2009 at 4:38 pm

I’m waiting for the day when my DCD PB runs out… I guess that means I should have some pb soon to make it happen!

29 roseyrebecca July 17, 2009 at 8:17 pm

I love the 365 Whole Food’s brand! I have their Blueberry Fruit Spread. It’s so good!

I love the idea of using the empty jar as a bowl!

Oooh, I lovelovelove oats in a jar!! I don’t know what it is, but it tastes a million times better than when it’s just stirred in or a dollop on top.

I have to have one kind of every nut butter in my fridge at all times. 🙂
