Bahamas Cruise: Part III

by Meghann on July 6, 2009

Day 3 – Coco Cay, Bahamas

Despite the mild wine hang over I woke up to on Sunday morning, I was more than ready to jump out of bed at 6:45 and head to the on board fitness center.

I happily ran 4 miles at the 7.0 setting while Derek ran on the treadmill beside me.

DSCN2104.JPG

There was no wait for a treadmill today. It was actually quite amusing the contrast of how many people were in the gym compared to the day before. I guess everybody already went ahead and gave up on staying fit on vacation. :)

After my run I did a 10 minute core session and stretched. We then headed to the sit down breakfast option again where this time we were sat with a lovely family complete with grandparents, parents and 2 adorable little girls.

When the pastry basket came by I could not resist a cinnamon swirl one.

DSCN2106.JPG

This was beyond good. :)

For breakfast I went with the build your own omlette selection.

DSCN2108.JPG

I asked for an egg white omlette with smoked salmon, herbs, mushrooms, tomato and onions. I was intriqued by the smoked salmon option on the menu and thought it would be fun to try. I was surprised with the lack of fishy taste in the omlette, but still thought it was good.

On the side I ordered a plate of fresh fruit.

DSCN2107.JPG

While we were running on the track, Derek and I watched the ship pull up to Coco Cay, so after breakfast we headed straight off the ship. We boarded a tender the took us to the tiny Island.

DSCN2114.JPG

Welcome to Coco Cay!

DSCN2117.JPG

We lucked out with a beautiful sunny sky, but as soon as we stepped off the ship I knew I needed a hat. I managed to pick up this nifty one a ridiculous price in the straw market.

DSCN2120.JPG

The hat came in handy when I settled into my chair with the Cullen family.

DSCN2124.JPG

I quickly discovered it was much too hot to spend too much time on the chairs. My time was much better spent in the water. :)

DSCN2137.JPG

Coco Cay was absolutely gorgeous with white sandy beaches and crystal clear skies.

DSCN2126.JPG

We even made friends with a starfish.

DSCN2138.JPG

DSCN2140.JPG

As the Island is privately owned by Royal Carribbean it was very convienent to have our lunch served on shore at noon by the ship’s staff.

DSCN2142.JPG

DSCN2143.JPG

I have to say the atmosphere just screamed hamburgers, so I had one lovely burger with some fruit and assorted salads.

DSCN2144.JPG

They also had fresh melon which was perfect for dessert with a piece of bran cake.

DSCN2145.JPG

After lunch Derek and I took a siesta on a hammock we found.

DSCN2149.JPG

I would like to point out this is the third day in a row I have passed out in the sun. Vacations rock!

We had a nice relaxing hour nap until a very rude couple walked by and yelled that the ship was leaving. Not cool people, not cool.

To keep with the spirit of tropical vacationing I was really craving a frozen tropical drink. Derek and I each ordered the Coco Loco which was the drink of the day.

DSCN2153.JPG DSCN2154.JPG

I ordered mine sans alcohol as I really did not see the point to it with the hot afternoon sun beating down.

They tasted yummy, but about halfway through our drink Derek and I were each trying to pawn the rest off on the other one. What sounded like a good idea at the time was starting to give us a tummy ache. Next time we know to just share the ‘fun’ drinks. We ended up each chucking the last half, but at least I ended up with a nifty cup out of it. :)

DSCN2155.JPG

After 6 hours of sun and almost depleting our supply of sunscreen, Derek and I were done with the beach. We boarded the tender and headed back to the ship.

Can you tell who was worst off?

DSCN2157.JPG

Let’s just say Derek got a wee bit red in the sun this trip. Poor boy reapplied the sunscreen twice as much as I did and still became a lobster.

Back on the ship I snacked on 1/2 of this box of mini wheats.

DSCN2168.JPG

The Monarch of the Seas is the first cruise ship I have been on that came complete with a Rock Clmbing wall on board. I had been dying to try it since day one, but when we tried to climb the day before the wall was wet and unclimbable. We lucked out with dry weather all day and attempt #2 that afternoon was a success.

DSCN2180.JPG

Rock climbing is a lot harder then it looks! I got stuck half way through but managed to finish strong!

DSCN2174.JPG

Talk about one hell of a strength workout!

DSCN2177.JPG

Derek kicked booty making his way to the top as well.

DSCN2188.JPG

After the climb we were both pretty hungry and managed to find his and her afternoon snacks.

I found an apple and plain yogurt.

DSCN2194.JPG

Which I mixed into this.

DSCN2195.JPG

Derek found pizza.

DSCN2196.JPG

I couldn’t resist a bite of pizza too. ;)

Getting ready for our last night on the ship Derek and I had a little modeling session in the bathroom mirror.

DSCN2198.JPG

And can I just point out that each night I was ready for the evening much before Derek was. What was up with that?!?! ;)

We hit up the Vegas style show before dinner and I have to confess the shows on Carnival I’ve seen have been better (sorry RC!)

After the show they brought out the majority of the entertainment staff of the ship onto the tiny stage.

DSCN2202.JPG

Must me cool to work on a cruise ship.

Dinner for the evening was bittersweet. Everything was coming to an ending much too quickly!

To toast the end of vacation our tablemates ordered a bottle of Riesling to share. I had a small glass, but am honestly not a big fan of sweet wine.

DSCN2211.JPG

I was STARVING when we sat down so I happily gobbled up two pieces of the poppyseed bread before they even took our orders.

DSCN2207.JPG

I think the hunger was still in my head as I happily ordered two appetizers to start my meal with.

DSCN2206.JPG

The caprese salad was refreshing and light.

DSCN2213.JPG

The Anti Pasti platter was great as well. I loved the roasted garlic addition and ate the pieces whole. I’m sure I had lovely breath the rest of the evening. ;)

DSCN2210.JPG

For the main course I was excited to see Indian on the menu and happily ordered the Kaju Paneer Dansak.

DSCN2203.JPG

Our waiter was actually being a little weird when I ordered it and tried to suggest something else. He didn’t think I would like it, but I stuck with my guns and ordered it anyways.

DSCN2215.JPG

I’m not sure why he didn’t think I would like, because I thought the dish was pretty good. It could have been a bit spicier, but besides that it was great. He was Indian, so maybe he just did not think it was good as the food from India. Oh well, I liked the watered down American adaptation of the dish.

When it came time for dessert I knew right away I wanted the Angel Pound Cake with Strawberries and Ice Cream.

DSCN2217.JPG

It was a make shift strawberry shortcake. Yummy!

For the first time the entire cruise Derek and I decided to hit up the casino after dinner. I’m not a big gambler, but I knew Derek was itching to burn some cash.

DSCN2219.JPG

We met up with the Charlotte couple and the boyfriend attempted to teach Derek how to logistically play Roulette.

Less then an hour and $60 later we discovered Roulette is NOT Derek’s game. Oh well. It was still fun to watch them play. :)

After that we had to finish packing our luggage and set it out for our departure.

It was a great 3 night cruise and the perfect long weekend get away. I can’t believe it’s all over! We just had too much fun! :)

Bahamas Cruise: Part II

by Meghann on July 6, 2009

Day 2 – Nassau, Bahamas

Since I did not want to waste a minute of my time on the cruise I made sure to set our wake up call for 6:45am on Saturday, so we can rise nice and early to make it to the gym.

DSCN1959.JPG

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of a jogging track that I have seen on cruises of my past, but was still thankful to have an assortment of treadmills to choose from with beautiful views of the never ending ocean.

DSCN1952.JPG

It was pretty packed in the fitness center at 7:00 am and I had to wait a bit for a treadmill, but it was totally worth it.

DSCN1955.JPG

I ended up doing a 30 minute speedwork session and felt AWESOME! I felt like I could go fast forever and had to keep forcing myself to do intervals as to not burn out too fast. I think it was the excitement of the cruise that just had my adrenaline pulsing.

After the treadmill did a quick arm work out at a very crowded mirror. I think all the manly men were not to happy with the 4 or 5 of us girls trying to squeeze in mirror space to do our work outs at well. I found it quite amusing actually. Screw you manly man, I need my mirror space too!

I then cooled down with some stretching and cool work.

Derek joined me at the fitness center as well, getting some biking in and weights.

DSCN1956.JPG

I left the fitness center a sweaty happy mess. :)

DSCN1958.JPG

Derek and I went straight from the fitness center to the sit down breakfast in the dining room. We were seated with two other sets of couples in their 20s. One set was from the Tampa area and the other was from Charlotte. We actually kept running into the Charlotte couple multiple times during the cruise and became good friends. I told them about the blog so I want to say a big Hello if they’re reading this! :)

The sit down breakfast begins with a selection of fresh pastries. I selected the almond berry looking bread.

DSCN1964.JPG

I had one of the slices and gave the other to Derek.

I was very happy to see the option of Crunchy Granola Cereal option on the menu.

DSCN1965.JPG

I ordered the granola selection and combined it all into a great big mess with a little bit of honey for a touch of sweetness.

DSCN1966.JPG

I also ordered additional fresh fruit on the side.

DSCN1967.JPG

The breakfast was really great and refreshing after my sweaty work out.

As it was 4th of July the staff of the ship went all out with Red, White & Blue Pride.

DSCN1961.JPG

A GIGANTIC Flag cake was on display all day.

DSCN1963.JPG

Unfortunately when it was time to serve it, we were just going to dinner and didn’t want to spoil our meals. Bummer.

However, we did catch the end of a presentation on how they prepare cakes on the cruise ship. And by ‘catch the end’ I mean we walked up as everyone was in line to sample the end result.

DSCN1973.JPG

Derek and I split the thin piece.

DSCN1974.JPG

It was ok. Neither of us are big cherry fans so we weren’t the best critics.

With time to kill, the two of us headed to the top deck to watch our ship pull into the Nassau port.

DSCN1982.JPG

We were a little scared with the gloomy dark clouds, but they seemed to disperse as soon as we docked. We got very lucky!

DSCN1986.JPG

Our excursion was suppose to meet on the dock at 12:45, so we decided to go ahead and take advantage of the free lunch on board.

DSCN1988.JPG

I was excited to try the Passage to India portion of the lunch buffet.

DSCN1882.JPG

I filled my plate with a sampling of the indian selections as well we a veggie filled salad.

DSCN1989.JPG

I also had a small bowl of Chilled Pineapple Soup, which seemed like a good idea, but was not great at all.

DSCN1991.JPG

I had a couple spoonfuls, but threw most of it out.

Check out Derek’s first plate of his lunch feast.

DSCN1992.JPG

See all the pickles? hehe

He also went back and had a big plate of salad as well. :)

At first Derek and I were not planning on doing any shore excursions and just explore Nassau on our own, but once on board we both decided it would be fun to partake in the Stingray & Snorkeling Adventure.

DSCN1962.JPG

We met our group on the dock where we were banded and corralled to another boat.

DSCN1995.JPG

DSCN1997.JPG

The second boat then took us on a very slow 30 minute ride to a small island with a secluded beach and lots of sun.

DSCN2008.JPG

The swimming with stingray portion of the excursion was actually a pretty amusing set up. They basically had caged a couple dozen sting rays in a portion of the beach for us to swim with.

DSCN2014.JPG

All the stingrays had had their stingers removed and are hand fed by groups of tourist twice a day.

DSCN2016.JPG

I think Derek and I pull off the snorkel look, don’t you think?

DSCN2017.JPG

Heading to the water!

DSCN2018.JPG

At first the stingrays were a little boring just to stare at. I mean it was cool to be floating above them, but after a couple of minutes of seeing stingrays and sand I was a little bored. Luckily it was about to get interesting.

The guides lined all of the snorkelers up along the shore and gave each of us a handful of fish bits to feed the stingrays. The stingrays that were once running from us as we snorkel were now our best friends and weaving in and out of the crowd like puppies hoping to be fed and petted.

DSCN2021.JPG

It was pretty cool to have the stingrays literally suck the food out of your hands. One stingray did get a hold of my pinky finger at one point. It didn’t hurt, but I was pretty much done had sticking my fingers near their mouths at that point.

DSCN2020.JPG

After an hour of feeding the stingrays we headed to the other side of the beach to chilax in the sun.

DSCN2009.JPG

I enjoyed a cookie I had slipped in my purse on the ship.

DSCN2010.JPG

The clouds were starting to cover the sun again at this point, which made for perfect napping weather. Derek and I both passed out and when we woke up the ship had returned to take us back to the dock.

On the way back I snacked on a pear I had grabbed at lunch.

DSCN2024.JPG

The tour boat dropped our group off on the dock where the typical shops were set up to sell cruise patrons as much Bahama theme junk as possible.

DSCN2001.JPG

We had time to kill so Derek and I decided to roam the shops and see how great our bartering skills were.

DSCN2031.JPG

Apparently mine suck. I tried desperately to bargain for one of the many knock off Coach bags on display, but no one would go under $40. I refused to pay too high and went home bagless. Oh well…

DSCN2030.JPG

I did manage to barter for a cute frame that will hold a beach picture from our trip.

DSCN2032.JPG

I also could not resist a scoop of Espresso Chip Ice Cream from an Ice Cream shop we walked buy.

DSCN2025.JPG

I want to say that Derek and I split this, but it was more like Derek had two or three bites and I demolished the rest. It was the perfect treat to enjoy in the hot island sun.

Saturday was our formal night and both Derek and I were very excited to play dress up for the evening. I love any excuse to wear a pretty dress and was especially excited to show off this new number I picked up at Gap for 50% off.

DSCN2036.JPG

Look… POCKETS!

DSCN2037.JPG

Love it!

My date was pretty sexy himself in his suave suit.

DSCN2047.JPG

We took some formal photos, then headed to the tail end of the Captain’s Cocktail party.

DSCN2044.JPG

I managed to grab a free glass of champagne from one of the cocktail carrying waiters.

DSCN2038.JPG

Me like the champagne!

DSCN2042.JPG

When the shindig ended I made friends with the Captain.

DSCN2045.JPG

We’re tight now. He asked if I wanted to steer the boat into our next port, but I told him he could handle that job.

The formal celebration continued with dinner where I started with a nice glass of Shiraz.

DSCN2059.JPG

I meant to only have one glass, but the couple at our table ordered a bottle of wine and kept refilling my glass. By the end of the night the bottle was gone and I was feeling very tipsy as I was explaining my blog to the table next to us. lol

But back to the actual meal.

My choice for bread this evening was a nice hunk of sweet cornbread.

DSCN2057.JPG

I couldn’t not decided which starter to order, so I got two!

First up… the Orange Carpaccio.

DSCN2054.JPG

This was good! I would never have paired the citrus with feta and red onion, but the combination worked well together.

DSCN2061.JPG

Next, I had to have the Escargot.

DSCN2052.JPG

Nothing is better then butter drenched snails. Yum!

DSCN2063.JPG

Derek had never tried escargot before, so I left him try a bite.

DSCN2065.JPG

He like it and actually had a second one on top of the first!

On past cruises I have been on lobster is usually the star of the formal night meal. Sadly, that was not the case on this ship. I made a pouty face on the lack of lobster, but did order the Eggplant Mozzarella Tower.

DSCN2053.JPG

It reminded me of deconstructed eggplant parmesean.

DSCN2066.JPG

There may not have been lobster on the menu, but there was souffle for dessert!

DSCN2068.JPG

I LOVE souffle and only ever get it on cruises. I was very happy to order it and enjoyed every single bite.

DSCN2071.JPG

Yum!

Derek and I enjoying our meal.

DSCN2058.JPG

I became very talkative and friendly after so many glasses of wine, so I had no problem asking the table next to us to take a picture of our table that evening.

DSCN2072.JPG

This is the point where I started jabbering on with our neighbor table about all things life and blog. I hope I didn’t make too much of a full of myself. :)

After dinner there was a comedy show we wanted to catch. Derek and I had fun with the camera as we waited for it to start.

DSCN2075.JPG

I would love to go into detail of the comedian and the jokes, but as soon as the lights went out so did I. I happily snoozed as everyone in the crowd laughed and giggled. It was a nice evening nap that left me refreshed for the midnight buffet pool party going on upstairs.

DSCN2077.JPG

DSCN2084.JPG

DSCN2085.JPG

I was still full from dinner and could not believe how much food people were shoving on their plates as they walked from table to table.

DSCN2076.JPG

I happened to catch a girl with a big bowl of gummy bears and even though I was full, suddenly had a craving for a couple. I managed to find the gummy bears stashed at the ice cream sundae display.

DSCN2079.JPG

I had a couple sans ice cream.

DSCN2080.JPG

Somebody however had no problem partaking in the full sundae set up. ;)

DSCN2082.JPG

There is something about being surrounded by a couple thousands of strangers that just makes you want to get up and dance.

DSCN2088.JPG

I hopped on the dance floor and quickly learned the choreography to ‘Hot, Hot, Hot’ Nothing is more fun then making a fool of yourself on camera. :)

DSCN2091.JPG

Of course there’s can’t be a pool side dance party without someone bringing out the limbo stick!

DSCN2096.JPG

Don’t worry I wasn’t the only one making a fool of themselves. ;)

DSCN2099.JPG

The camera goes both ways!

I think it was time to call it a night at this point. ;)

Stay tuned for Part III at Coco Cay in the Bahamas!
