Back in the Florida Heat

by Meghann on June 21, 2009

I was not messing around in my post this morning, it is HOT outside! It’s already over 100 degrees out in the high Florida sun and unfortunately staying outside is just not an option for long periods of time.

Abbie and I did brave the heat wave to head out to the local Farmer’s Market, but Abbie spent the majority of the time rolling the shade, refusing to step out in the sun.

I bet she missed that cool mountain air.

Thank god for my great new short hair cut in this heat!

CIMG6717.JPG

I discovered another versatile do with my hair this morning.

CIMG6718.JPG

Yes, i still have the power to make itty bitty french braids. :) For those of you who have e-mailed me wanting to take the plunge with cutting you hair short, but are afraid that if you cut your hair that you won’t know what to do with it. The above is just exhibit A. ;)

Walking through the market I had my obligatory sample treat.

Bite of Pearl Waffle.

CIMG6719.JPG

Kettle Corn

CIMG6722.JPG

Chocolate Cake with Mint Icing….. YUM!!!

CIMG6725.JPG

And a small slice of fresh cut Watermelon.

CIMG6728.JPG

To help cool myself down I had a large Unsweet Tea with Lemon.

CIMG6724.JPG

I arrived right as the market opened at 10:00am so I had a great selection of fruit and veggies to choose from.

CIMG6720.JPG

I was so excited to fill my fridge that I came home with as much fruit that my bag could hold.

CIMG6738.JPG

  • Cantaloup
  • 3 Zucchini
  • 1lb Okra
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • 4 Apples
  • 6 Peaches
  • 4 Kiwis

Then I made the mistake of holding off on lunch and heading to Publix with a little hunger that developed into full scale hunger. Of course everything in the store looked great and so many ideas were floating through my mind on what I could make.

CIMG6739.JPG

  • Broccoli
  • Kashi H2H
  • Blue Corn Tortilla Chips
  • Spinach
  • Unsweet Tea
  • Tempeh
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze
  • Tofu
  • Stonyfield Plain Yogurt
  • Low Sugar Apricot Preserves
  • Smoked Salmon
  • Carrots
  • Tomato
  • Black Beans
  • Sweet Potato
  • Organic Chicken Breasts
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • 1/2 Doz Eggs
  • Green Beans
  • Whole Flax Seeds
  • Cucumber
  • Tea Bags

I may have spent a tad much more then intended, but atleast my fridge doesn’t look quite so sad anymore. :)

CIMG6744.JPG

Once everything was put away I pulled out anything that looked good and made a Hugh Jass salad.

CIMG6747.JPG

In my bowl:

  • Spinach
  • Carrot
  • Jalapenos
  • Blue Corn Tortilla Chips
  • 1 Peach
  • Radish
  • Onion
  • Black Beans
  • Whole Flax Seeds
  • Verde Salsa
  • Tomato
  • Okra

That really hit the spot!! It was so fresh and so good. The perfect meal on a hot summer day.

Now all I need to do is stop procrastinating and clean up my messy apartment and unpack a weeks work of dirty clothes. :)

I love your french braids! I have never been able to successfully braid my hair, I find it quite challenging haha. That farmers market looks incredible! Free samples are always a major plus :)

Your hair is cute…I’ve been thinking of chopping mine off lately, but I’m too much of a wimp! And there’s no sympathy from me about the 100-degree heat I’m afraid, there’s still no sign of summer at all over here!

Those samples from the market look so good!

I want to jump over to my farmers market and grab some treats now. :)

I just went to Earthfare and they have gelato samples that were huge. Delish!

love salad filled with just about everything.

I often wonder how you run in the heat. What is the temp and humidity like in the mornings in florida?

excited to meet you at the summit!

Umm, can you do a video tutorial on how to french braid your own hair?! I’m so pathetic at it.

I’m actually in the process of growing my hair out. I had it really short for about two years–like boy short so I couldn’t so anything thing with it. Yours is an awesome length though.

That salad looks amazing! Like the corn chip and salsa idea.

And I am dying to go to a farmer’s market. They have one every weekend where I live and I just haven’t gotten over to it yet. :-)

Great looking salad! You might want to grind the flax seeds, I don’t think you can digest them whole, so they don’t have as many nutritious benefits.
