Run, Beach, Bowl

by Meghann on June 6, 2009

After a week of post-marathon recovery, this morning I finally felt it was time to lace up my shoes and hit the pavement. My legs had been feeling great and I was just planning on running to the end of the road and back which comes to roughly 3.5 miles.

My Sister and Melissa joined me on the recovery run. At first Kelly bolted out fast and I had to remind her I had just run a marathon the week before. She managed to slow down but we still held a strong 9:00 minute pace until the end of the road.

I kept doing mental checks of my body. Left leg good…. left knee good… right knee good…. back of right knee not so good.

I have yet to find anyone who is able to tell me the proper name to the muscle on the back of my leg that connects my calves and hamstrings, but that is the muscle that has been on the tighter side since I finished my race. During the run it started feeling very tight again and at the halfway point I had to stop and stretch it out and let my running buddies know I was going to need to slow the pace on the way back.

Kelly took off for a few more miles while Melissa and I headed back to the house at a much slower pace.

With the extra tight leg I knew I had to take it was easy or risk being injured. My first run back I would have to say went well, but not as great as expected. I just need to take it easy a bit longer before I know I will be back to normal.

It still feel great to get a run in. I celebrated with a great breakfast prepared by my Daddy.

DSCN1314

My plated had Scrambled Eggs, Fruit Salad, Biscuit and a Tiny spoonful of Sausage Gravy.

The past part was the fruit salad, which I went back for seconds and then helped finish the bowl!

Melissa joined me outside for blogger breakfast photography.

DSCN1313

Our plates were the prettiest of the table. :)

The beach was on the agenda for this morning and I could not have been more excited! It was actually pretty fun driving in the daylight to where we had witnessed the turtles nesting the evening before.

First we had to make a little detour stop by the water so Melissa and her boyfriend Brad could catch their first glimpse at wild manatees.

DSCN1319

I guess its because I grew up  by the water and Manatees are such a common creature here, but it never occured to me that other people have never seen one outside of captivity before!

We were lucky that two beautiful manatees popped up as soon as we made it to the dock.

DSCN1316

I think they knew we wanted some close up shots, so they swam up to say hi. They were very sweet manatees.

When we made it to the beach all the girls went straight to laying in the sand, while the boys headed to the water.

DSCN1327

We got out there early and before the rain. It could not have been a more beautiful day on the water!

DSCN1324

We had fun playing in the sand.

DSCN1342

And hiked to see if we could find where our turtle had nested the night before.

DSCN1332

She was a little far away from where we were and we gave up on walking through the sand. But, this is what the stake looked like that we helped mark the nest with.

Obviously, you can not go to the beach with out snacks!

DSCN1334

I had a handful of these yummy chips

DSCN1333

A handful of Blue Corn Tortilla Chips

DSCN1330

and some Trail Mix Melissa had brought.

DSCN1337

Unfortunately the clouds moved in and cut our fun in the sun day short!

DSCN1346

We stopped at Publix on the way home to pick up some subs for lunch.

DSCN1347

I ordered the Boars Head Salsalito Turkey with Honey Mustard, Jalapenos, Banana Peppers, Black Olives, Tomatoes, Garlic Pickles, Onions, Lettuce and a drizzle of vinegar.

DSCN1350

This sub was SPICY!

I also had a chopped Green apple and another handful of the Buffalo Bleu Cheese Kettle Chips on the side.

DSCN1348

After lunch I passed out in the living room before making the drive back to Orlando.

On the way to my apartment I was trying to figure out what to have for dinner and all I could think of was Almond Butter on vegetables. So in a new trial experiment I had a bowl of steamed vegetables with almond butter on top.

DSCN1352

For the base of the bowl I had steamed carrots, green beans, leftover sweet and sour cabbage, and some random cantalope I was craving. It was a ridculous odd combination of flavors but it totally worked! I am now under the impression you can literally throw anything into a bowl and as long as you are craving it, it will be awesome!

To satisfy my sweet tooth I had a small bowl of Coconut Milk Coconut Ice Cream with a sprinkle of Chocolate is For Lovers Granola sprinkled on top.

DSCN1356

I was very disappointed this afternoon when Caitlin texted me to bail on out bike ride plans for tomorrow. Luckily she made up for it when she invited me out bowling this evening instead.

DSCN1362

She also invited fellow Orlando blogger Megan from MegaNerdRuns.

DSCN1368

What can I say Meg[H]an[N]s are cool no matter how you spell it. :)

We originally set out to bowl three games, but the girls were tired of bowling interrupting our conversation, so we bailed on the third and instead gabbed about all things life. It’s always so much fun to meet new people and get their life story. :)

As always its impossible to bowl without a little beer confidence.

DSCN1357

Unfortunately the bowling ally bar had slim beer selection and as we ordered ore pitchers the selections got smaller. I was very excited they did have Shock Top, but our pitcher order tapped the keg. We also managed to tap the AmberBrock tap!

I had 1 cup of the single Shock Top pitcher.

DSCN1358

Sadly, none of the other beers peaked my interest.

Somehow Caitlin brought up her uncanny ability to out chug a frat guy. Needless to say her brother in law put her to the test.

DSCN1367

She kicked his butt... twice. ;)

Wow, what a day! Time to get some sleep! I am excited for the 20 mile bike ride I am still planning on, despite Caitlin’s bailing on me. It will feel nice to get out on Blue again, it has been far too long!

Good Night!!

Friday

by Meghann on June 6, 2009

It’s the weekend!!!! Actually I can hardly believe its Saturday morning already! Thanks to an afternoon of fun activities, my Friday flew by yesterday.

I am starting to realize when ever I attend meetings at work I always leave starving. I am not sure if its legitimate hunger or plain boredom, but I entered my 9:30 meeting yesterday morning still full from breakfast and left wanting to bite my arm off. I’m sure it doesn’t help that the meeting was being catered by Dunkin Donuts & McDonalds.

When I returned to my desk I dug into my morning snack to keep the hunger at bay.

DSCN1293

Last month I sampled the vanilla flavored Snackaroons and today it was the chocolate’s turn to be devoured.

DSCN1294

Definitely prefer the chocolate to the vanilla! These babies were very rich and very tasty. I loved them!! Too bad my sample package only contained 2. :(

Oddly enough those mini snackaroons filled me up way past my lunch time. This is what makes me believe it was boredom and not hunger! Oh well. My supervisor gave me permission to leave work a little early so I waited for my lunchtime hunger to build and called it a day at 1:00pm. It felt really good to know I had some free time on my hands to catch up on things!

First I needed food!

DSCN1295

My Thursday night meal of Leftovers made a fabulous addition for lunch again.

DSCN1297

This time I mixed in some Trader Joe’s Tomato Chutney to the cous cous creation and placed it on top of some spinach. The tomato chutney gave a nice smokey, spicey touch to the combination. It worked really well and I only wish I would have thought of it the night before.

I was craving a sweet, crunchy apple, so I chopped up a small apple and had it on the side.

DSCN1299

It was very refreshing,

I had been planning on heading to my parent’s house for the night, so I packed up and headed over early.

When I arrived I was excited to find Ice Pops in my parent’s fridge. I became obsessed with these after discovering how amazing they are during my marathon. I immediately pulled out a red one. :)

DSCN1300

I got to my parent’s right as my Mom was getting off of work. I casually suggested we go get pedicures and 30 minutes later my feet were soaking in a nice hot foot bubble bath.

DSCN1302

My feet were beat up after months of training and running a marathon the week before. I had been forewarned NOT to get a pedicure before my marathon as I had worked hard to build those calluses

and soft feet would leave me suseptable to blister. I had no need to worry any more and I happily read my copy of New Moon as I am sure the tech bath mouthed my hard feet and worked at cutting away the blisters.

DSCN1304

The results were beautiful. I was too embarrassed to take a before picture, but I should have. It was seriously night and day!

DSCN1305

After pedicures I treated my new feet to a night out on the town with the family and we all went to dinner at my Dad’s favorite Italian place in town, Victorios.

I started with the side salad with the house dressing on the side.

DSCN1306

My Sister, her boyfriend and I had ordered a large pizza to share.

DSCN1308

We made the waitress laugh a little bit when we asked for Mushrooms, Onions, Pineapple, Spinach, Tomato, & Banana Pepper on top. I guess its not every day someone asks for so many toppings?

Piece #1

Piece #2′s

DSCN1310

I felt the pizza was missing a little something so I stole some raw onions from my Mom’s fish sandwich and added it to my pizza. It made a big difference.

I also had 1/3 of another slice. The pizza was really good, but really greasy. Also the toppings had been precooked before being added to the pizza and you could tell. I prefer fresh topping that are cooked along with the pizza.

The rest of my evening was spent doing something fun, that unfortunately I was not allowed to take pictures of. My sister got a job over the summer working for the Cape Canaveral Seashores and she was able to hooks us up for free to watch the turtles nesting on the seashore. As long as I have lived on the coast I have never had an opportunity to watch turtles nesting and I was really excited to watch something so few people will ever get to witness.

Melissa and her boyfriend, Brad, even made the trip up to watch the magic happen!

At first we learned about the turtles we would be seeing and how to not disturb this special moment. We were to watch a Loggerhead tutrle makes its way up the beach, dig its nest, lay the eggs and head back to sea. We would then help cover and mark the nest so that other animals would not have the pleasure of digging the eggs up for a free meal.

The whole program is ran through the National Park Service and I believe we were the only locals in our group of 20 or so spectators. We waited a few minutes before our guide got the call that a turtle was coming on shore. We then drove out to the portion of the beach where the turtle was making its ways up shore to lay its eggs. It was pretty cool to get so close and personal while the turtle laid its eggs. It took her an hour to lay 100-120 eggs before crawling back to the ocean.

Needless today we were all exhausted when we returned home well after midnight. I passed out before I could even think about it and had a great 7+ hours of sleep.
