Happy Memorial Day

by Meghann on May 25, 2009

Happy Memorial Day!!

I am predicting plenty of BBQs and picnics in many of your futures. For others I am predicting house cleaning catch up ad extra errand running. Either way I hope you enjoy this wonderful holiday and brief break from reality. πŸ™‚

Instead of going the traditional route of Memorial Day celebrating, Melissa and I are going to brave the holiday crowds and head to Islands of Adventure! Melissa has been living outside of Orlando since January and she has yet to experience any of our theme parks. I told her we had to change that!

With all the walking and waiting I have planned for today I knew I needed a breakfast to keep me full and energized.

These waffles were made couresty of Aunt Jemiah’s Whole Wheat Waffle Mix. I made some slight alterations by using coconut milk, egg whites and a spoonful of almond butter with the mix. I then topped the waffles with vanilla non-fat yogurt and some cinnamon apple.

I had 2.5 waffle squares and it definitely left me very full. I think the extra addition of the almond butter helped too. πŸ™‚

I have to figure out a way to sneak in a free and healthy lunch to avoid the downfalls of pretzels and burgers. Any suggestions on what to bring that I can hide in a pocket or one of those hidden zipper pockets in my bag? THey are really rude with their anti-outside food rule at the parks. πŸ™

Sounds like fun! that waffle looks awesome!

How about some kashi crackers..or a bar? (lara..cliff)..a cut up orange?? that sucks about their policy πŸ™

Sounds like a GREAT day I wish the Midwest was more exciting! It’s just raining here blah…

Could you fit an apple, a pb sandwich, a bar, some other fruit. carrots and hummus in a ziploc in there? I am not sure that’s a toughie!

7 ksgoodeats May 25, 2009 at 8:06 am

I stick food in the “hidden” pocket inside my purse (the zipper one) and they’ve never caught me! Good luck!!

jealous! islands of adventure is my favorite park EVER! you’re gonna have a blast:)

9 whitneyinchicago May 25, 2009 at 8:29 am

Take a big bag with a tshirt (in case it rains…haha) and put the food inside the shirt and then fold it back up.

Works every time πŸ™‚

Have a fun day!

Hope you have a blast!

11 inmytummy May 25, 2009 at 9:01 am

Could you sneak in a pb on english muffin type sandwich?

12 Mara @ What's For Dinner? May 25, 2009 at 9:09 am

Have a blast!!! I’d wear your Gracie sports bra and tuck a bar of some sort in the little pocket πŸ™‚

13 BethT May 25, 2009 at 9:17 am

It sucks to leave the park, but we would always bring food in a cooler and eat it outside. Then we could bring drinks, too, and everything stayed cool.

14 Niki May 25, 2009 at 9:23 am

I love that park! So jealous you are going today!! How about sneaking in a PB sandwich?

15 spicygranola May 25, 2009 at 9:39 am

some type of bar will probably be easiest to hide. I hope you escape the unhealthy theme park temptations, but indulging every once in a while is good in my opinion! Your additions to the waffle mix are so creative and sound yummers. Coconut milk? Yes please

16 Meredith May 25, 2009 at 9:48 am

a little bag of trail mix? fruit leather?

Happy Memorial Day! (from the Canadian)

Sounds like a great way to spend the day! I hope the crowds are not too horrible. It’s hard to sneak things in to parks–hmmm—package of trailmix? Not much of a meal but a definite snack.

Great looking waffles!

Have fun!

mm that breakfast looks so good!!

Have a fun day at the park! That’s so annoying they don’t let you bring in food! .. Maybe a bar or like a baggie of trailmix?

yaay!!! I would love to meet up!! lets keep in touch!

22 Maddy May 25, 2009 at 10:08 am

Ooo that tshirt idea is brilliant! I usually just put the food at the bottom and put my wallet or something over it cause they just poke around in the bag. Good luck girl! Hope you have fun and no rain!!! =)

23 Jenny May 25, 2009 at 10:10 am

ah what a fun day! enjoy girlie πŸ™‚

24 Emily May 25, 2009 at 10:28 am

Depending on how big the pocket is you could go all out – dried fruit, a baggie of cereal, even candy for dessert (so you don’t feel jealous watching people with their park sweets)

28 Diana by Design May 25, 2009 at 1:15 pm

29 peacelovepb May 25, 2009 at 3:59 pm

now those are some waffles!! have fun today!

30 Meredith May 25, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Those waffles look so yummy! Have fun!

31 melissa May 25, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Have fun, it must be great to have such cool option! I have always said that NYC and Disney/theme parks are a lot alike in the summer. Hot, humid, humanity, tourists, expensive…and yet the best place on earth.

32 Angela (Oh She Glows) May 25, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Ohh the waffles look so yummy!

I hate when they restrict outside food- it’s such a pain in the butt! I would probably make a pita and put it in my purse along with an apple and a larabar. I always have nuts in my purse too- for emergencies!

33 Sarah (from See Sarah Eat) May 25, 2009 at 6:46 pm

I always manage to hide a bar somewhere in my purse where they can’t find it. I hate places that do that because for one, their food is so unhealthy and two, so expensive! Hope you were able to pull it off.
