YouBars Review

by Meghann on March 31, 2009

I decided yesterday that this morning would be the morning I try running 7 miles before work instead of my normal 4-5. The thought of running 7 miles in the morning was really comforting and I looked forward to the distance while I slept during the night.

When the alarm went off at 5:30 I was still anxious for the 7 miles and was out the door at 5:50. The weather was the perfect temp, the sky was still dark and my legs felt great. I easily completed the 7 mile in 1:06:44. Even though I know I can’t run too many miles every morning, this makes me realize that I want to pick up my mileage at least two runs a week leading up to my marathon.

Last week Joel from You Bars sent me a few samples to test out and review for the blog.

I love the concept of You Bars and it’s Build-A-Bar and Make-A-Shake concept. Basically you select what goes into the bar or shake mix. Everything is all natural and because you are choosing all the ingredients, you know exactly what’s going in there.

Instead of building my own bars and shakes, Joel sent me an assortment of their popular buys, which is another alternative you can order if you were feeling uncreative at the moment.

Unfortunately two of the three shake mixes he sent me contained Banana, so I will be unable to sample those, but this Vanilla Dreams mix was banana free.

The Vanilla Dreams Shake Mix contains Soy Protein, Organic Cane Juice, Organic Vanilla Powder (Organic Sucrose, Organic Vanilla bean Extractives).

Into my blender I added the Vanilla Dreams mix with some Ice, Fat Free Milk, Strawberries, & Peanut Butter.

It ended up tasting like a Vanilla-Strawberry-Peanut Butter Milk Shake. 🙂 It was good, but I’m starting to realize my blender sucks because I was chewing the ice before then drinking the shake.  The shake mix was very mellow and not to over powering of a sweet or vanilla flavor so the peanut butter taste really shined through, which I enjoyed.

With the Vanilla Dream Shake I also sampled the Breakfast Bar I was sent.

The Breakfast Bar had a short list of pure ingredients: Dates, Egg White Powder, Honey, Cocoa Powder, Instant Coffee Crystals (caffeinated), Cinnamon.

I should start off by saying that I do not like coffee, but I sometimes like coffee flavored things.. such as Ice Cream….but this tasted like coffee from a cup. Not my cup of tea. The flavors were all off and just didn’t mix. I honestly had two bits before chucking it and grabbing a handful of Kashi H2H and Kashi Go Lean Crunch instead.

This flavor may be good for some people, just not for me.

In conclusion I wish I would have had the opportunity to build my own bar and shake mixes so that I could have done a fairer review of the site. I am a very picky eater so this idea would be much more suited for me. So my opinion is if you do use YouBars, don’t by the popular ones, have fun & be creative to build you own because really that’s the point of the site. 🙂

AND if you are cool enough to go build you own bars and shake mixed at then I encourage you to use the discount code GRADUATEMEGHANN at check out to enjoy 5% off your entire order. So go check them out, give them a try yourself and get a discount!! 🙂

Interesting products!!

“It ended up tasting like a Vanilla-Strawberry-Peanut Butter Milk Shake”

I am so impressed that you ran seven miles before work. Go you!

As for the You bars- they’re so expensive! The concept is really cool though, so maybe someday I’ll try them out.

Good for you on your long run! I’m so impressed by what a good runner you are.

I like the idea of the YouBars…too bad you didn’t like the flavor. After my wedding, when I don’t have to save money like a crazy person, I’d love to give them a try.

Interesting on the YouBars. Thanks for the review!

5 Lee March 31, 2009 at 9:15 am

What are you going to do with the Banana ones? Interested in some sort of blogger trade? I have some unopened jars of PB2….

6 Missy (Missy Maintains) March 31, 2009 at 9:15 am

Good idea to mix the You Shake with strawberries and peanut butter! I have not tried that one yet so I am going to do the same!

OMG, I just went to the YoBar site, and can we discuss how awkward their celebrity page is?!?!

HAHA, wow. What a fun company!

That concept of build a bar sounds really cool! But even I love coffee and don’t think that sounds like a good bar combo!!
Sweet discount!

12 shelby March 31, 2009 at 9:54 am

Why can you not have banana?

13 Sara March 31, 2009 at 10:21 am

I’ve been wanting to try YouBars for awhile. Too bad you didn’t like that flavor. I love coffee, so I have a feeling I would enjoy that bar. Thanks for the 5% discount!

14 ksgoodeats March 31, 2009 at 10:40 am

Way to go on that run! That bar sounds fantastic to me – I love coffee 🙂

15 bobbi March 31, 2009 at 10:43 am

WOW 7 mile week day run, ROCK IT girl! THanks for the review too, I need to try these bars.

16 Erica March 31, 2009 at 10:47 am

Great job on the mileage! That bar sounds really good- I’m all for coffee in bar form 😉

17 biz319 March 31, 2009 at 10:51 am

My daughter would love those coffee bars – she loves all things coffee!

Thanks for the review and good job on the run this morning! 😀

18 Rose March 31, 2009 at 11:07 am

Great job on your run. Just curious – is it dark when you go out at 5:50? (I assume so…) I would love to run in the AM but it’s so dark…

19 Meghann March 31, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Yes, its dark, but I have pepper spray and its so quiet with no traffice I prefer it that way. 🙂

20 runnerskitchen March 31, 2009 at 11:13 am

Hi Meghann,
I LOVE coffee, but it seems like that coffee flavored bar might be too intense, even for me!
Question – I remember a few months ago you featured some advice on how to build a better blog. I have been unable to find those posts! Where are they? Thanks!

21 runsarah March 31, 2009 at 11:23 am

7 mile AM run on a weekday?? Awesome!! That shake looks yummy and sweet…youbar is definitely a neat concept.

22 Danica March 31, 2009 at 11:31 am

WTG at slamming out the 7 mile run. You seriously should check out The Magic Bullet for your smoothies. I LOVE mine and use it for so many things. You can get them everywhere but have found that Costco (you can order them online) is the best deal because it includes a blender/juicer for the same price as other stores that do not have it.

Have a fabulous Tuesday!

23 Hangry Pants March 31, 2009 at 11:34 am

Great job with the run this morning!

Thanks for the YouBar review. Eating coffee in a bar form does not sound like fun!

24 Bec March 31, 2009 at 11:38 am

i love how few ingredents they have!

25 Hallie March 31, 2009 at 11:50 am

I love the You Bar idea, but it’s definitely cost-prohibitive for me. I’d just eat a Larabar and call it a day 🙂

7 miles on a weekday is awesome! Haha who am I kidding, 7 miles any day of the week is more than I’ve ever done. I really hope that someday I find as much joy in running as you do. I still get frustrated because I feel at this point (~6 months since starting the Couch to 5k) I should be better, faster, and fitter than I am. I’m trying to be patient with myself, but it’s HARD 😀

26 Errign March 31, 2009 at 1:08 pm

I don’t think that bar would have been my taste, but your smoothie looked awesome, ice chunks and all! :]

27 lauren (athlEAT) March 31, 2009 at 3:15 pm

great reviews and thanks for the discount – i have been wanting to try those youbars…

28 Meg March 31, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Wow. That smoothie this morning sounds amazing!!!

Sweet about the discount! I can’t wait to try the vanilla shake!
