How I Became a Blogger

by Meghann on December 18, 2008

My lunch today included mostly refrigerator items. πŸ™‚

CIMG4511

I finally got all of my fresh veggies back in my fridge at home. I missed having so many fresh items. I always take for granted all of the zillion of things I store in my fridge. Never again will I make that mistake. πŸ™‚

CIMG4512

My HUMONGOUS salad contained:

  • Spinach
  • Tomato
  • Mushrooms
  • Feta Cheese
  • Black Beans
  • Corn
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Salsa

It was sooo good and very refreshing from the heated up left overs I have been surviving off of.

With my salad I also had my last VeggieGirl Pistachio-Pear-Ginger Blondie.

CIMG4515

It was just as great as my previous ones. Thank you again VeggieGirl for the wonderful treats. πŸ™‚

Before a very long meeting I had this morning I snacked on the last of my bag of Pumpkin Spice Trail Mix.

CIMG4509

There was a little more then a 1/4 cup left, but it was mostly raisins and I usually avoid the raisins so I ended up having less then a 1/4 cup total. It wasn’t very filling which explains the gigantic salad I had for lunch. πŸ™‚

I see quite a few of you clicked through to my old blog yesterday. I have never seen a more clicked on link on here before. It was a little surreal. A couple of you were asking why I stuck with blogging this time and I think it has more to do with the love of the community I feel now. You guys are awesome.

Caitlin and Jenna were truly the ones who encouraged me to start this blog way back after I first met them face to face in September. I had been a lurker, so when I moved down to Orlando I was brave enough to strike up a meet up with Caitlin and our friendship grew from there. I met Jenna a week later. I never told them about my previous blogging attempt, so when Jenna suggested I created my own the idea started brewing inside of me again.

When I started before I was still very new reading food blogs and was not sure what made a great food. This time around I had been reading them for months and knew what could make or break a blog. So I threw some ideas in my head and combined all of the aspects I liked from other blogs and made one of my own. It helped having Caitlin and Jenna as friends so I knew I had at least two readers and it kind of grew from there.

I’m still amazed how many hits I get on here a day and how many wonderful readers I have. Thanks to my blog I have also discovered new blogs with some truly inspiring stories. I have also met a ton of great people, both in the blog world and in real life.

I am so happy I stuck with blogging this time around and it truly is thanks to you guys!

Now you’ve heard my β€˜How I Became a Blogger Story’ what’s yours? What was the thing that made you start up a food blog and what makes you stick with it? Or if you’re solely a reader what keeps you coming back? Out of curiosity why do you keep reading my blog particularly? I’m just curious. πŸ™‚

My story is very similar to yours – I started a “secret” food blog but couldn’t keep it up. Then one weekend, when I was supposed to be writing a 10 page paper, I bit the bullet and made a Wordpress blog. I started commenting on others and then it grew from there – and I couldn’t believe people stopped by to read it! I think that’s the main reason why I stick with it – I love the fact that people get something out of what I write and will continue to share what I can as long as people are still interested in reading about it!

As for your blog, Meghann, I enjoy reading it because you come up with some of the most creative concoctions I’ve ever seen. I love your meals for one and I think that you are very honest and open – and consistent! All very important qualities in a successful blogger – you should be proud πŸ™‚

i started reading food blogs a little over a year ago..started with eatlikeme and then kind of grew from there and now i find myself checking them several times a day haha..i think its because i enjoy seeing how ‘real’ people eat and stay healthy especially you caitlin and jenna since we are all about the same age (24) and also because im a self admitted very nosey person haha. keep up the great work!

5 Lindsey (Mrs. LC) December 18, 2008 at 2:05 pm

I mainly started my blog because I had been thinking about it for a long time, as I needed a place to store my recipes that I created, as well as recipe photos and reviews. When I actually started I was in a new area, didn’t have friends here, didn’t have a job yet, and needed a creative outlet for myself. πŸ™‚

I keep reading your blog cuz I love your blog and love you! πŸ™‚

Out of curiosity – what would you say makes or breaks a blog? That could be a fun addition to one of your posts, and it may encourage some of your readers to start blogs of their own!

6 Erica December 18, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Yayyy for a fridge lunch! That salad looks so good! I started blogging because I was always endlessly searching for recipes! I wanted an easier way to talk to other ladies who like to cook/eat healthy to see what they make for dinner/lunch/breakfast. I really loved Tina and Kath’s blogs and though hmm I would love to do this.

7 Meghann December 18, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Great idea Lindsey! I can do a Blogging 101 πŸ™‚

8 ksgoodeats December 18, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Salsa on a salad – love it!

After reading blogs for almost a year and feeling like I “knew” everyone I made a spur of the moment decision and jumped in! I’m glad I did though – everyone is so sweet!

9 Amelia December 18, 2008 at 2:29 pm

I’m just a reader for now (altho Blog 101 sounds like a wonderful idea). My lovely Google Reader started recommending food blogs for me a few months ago and I’ve gotten hooked on them. I’ve been trying to exercise more and eat better and the blogs offer great solutions from real people. I read your blog in particular because I feel like I can relate in a lot of ways since I’m a recent grad as well.

10 CB December 18, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Meghann,

Your blog is one of my very favorites! I read it daily. I think that you keep it interesting…that it is not just a food diary. I like your creativity in the kitchen. I love to cook and eat and any ideas I can get that make it more healthy I love, so thank you.

I also love reading about your running…I am jealous that you started out just this year and have already done a half marathon. I started running a while ago with a personal trainer. I thought I would learn some magic tricks to make me love it. I have a serious love/hate with running. I love the accomplishment and how it can tone and shape my body like no other cardio. I hate how hard it is for me and how slow I am. I am lucky to run an 11 min mile. I am sticking with it though and your progress is inspiring. I am sure once i shed another 20 pounds it will help!!!

Keep up the great blog.

11 tami December 18, 2008 at 2:39 pm

i am not a food blogger, i oringally started blogging due to scrapbooking/crafting but i recently switched my blog over mostly to posting about my workouts.

why do i come back to your blog? i am not sure, you seem very genuine (and when the weather gets nicer i really want to try your tennis court routine!)

i do not eat well at all, NO fruits or veggies for me, but i have cleaned up my diet a little, i am trying….i love to run, you love to run, you like ice cream, i like ice cream πŸ™‚

12 seecourteat December 18, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Hey Meghann, I’m sure many will agree that we are happy you have stuck with it this time! Your blog is always a pleasure to read.

I started a blog to express myself and to create a little “time capsule” of sorts. Life is short…gotta make the little things and moments last! Oh…and of course because I love FOOD!

13 natalie December 18, 2008 at 3:13 pm

I started blogging because after nearly a year of reading other blogs it motivated me to start me own. Reading blogs completely changed my views on food and fitness, and I wanted to give back to the blogging community.

I first started reading your blog when I found you though Caitlin’s blog.I keep reading because your really sweet and genuine and you keep things real! πŸ™‚

14 Kristina December 18, 2008 at 3:22 pm

I started blogging because I saw how much great support you ladies give each other. πŸ™‚

I read your blog because you keep things real and interesting, and seem like a very nice girl!

I’m also curious about what you think makes or breaks a blog! πŸ™‚

Delicious looking salad, as always!

15 carolinebee December 18, 2008 at 3:39 pm

hah- well probably 95% because of YOU! yay…I really like reading your blog b/c you are very consistent (3 times a day!) And you are so honest about how you are feeling, what you’re thinking, whatever..AND you make tasty, creative dishes PARA UNO that are convenient for little singletons like me! πŸ˜€

16 Heather Eats Almond Butter December 18, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Beautiful salad! I just recently started blogging, and I’m having so much fun. I started my blog after much encouragement from friends and family. After losing a good bit of weight and keeping it off for several years, I thought a blog would be a good way to reach out to others with weight/food issues. I’m hoping to encourage those who want to live a healthier life, but don’t really know where to start. The support and encouragement I’ve received has been amazing. I love it.

17 sarah (ghost world) December 18, 2008 at 3:54 pm

i don’t have a food blog — i have a working in medicine / running / cooking / life blog πŸ™‚ i started it because i was bored back in 2004 on a pediatrics rotation in the middle of nowhere, and now i am so glad i stuck to it because i love going back and seeing the ‘old’ me through new eyes!

i really like your blog because it’s not just a food blog — it’s a lifestyle blog! and it has become even more exciting to me now that you are getting more into running! keep it up!

18 Kaye December 18, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Meghann-
I truly wish I had the self control and discipline to track things the way you do. Alas, I do not, and the 2 pathetic attempts at blogging that I’ve had are proof.
πŸ™
But…I take much pleasure in reading your blog everyday, because you are very, very sweet, and very, very real!

Take care!

19 Bridget December 18, 2008 at 5:08 pm

I started mine because one day I stumbled upon one(I think it was Tina’s) and the more I read the more I was like “hey this is just like how I eat, and how I feel about food, exercise, and nutrition!” It was like discovering this world of people just like you! I enjoyed reading them so much that I really wanted to have one of my own. It’s so fun and I wish I didn’t have a “real” job so I could blog more and put more effort into it…but alas it’s hard to find all the time for that!!

I think we started our blogs around the same time, so I remember that was one of the things I liked about you! You also just have a great attitude about everything, and very energetic…basically fun to read πŸ™‚ Plus awesome meal ideas!!

20 ErinE December 18, 2008 at 5:12 pm

I just started my blog, but i started it because I really like the blog community. Everyone is so positive and encouraging! These blogs focus on living healthy, which a lot of my friends do not do. They actually often criticize me for having such a healthy lifestyle. It is awesome to have the support and know that other people out there have the similar ideas about fitness and food that I do!

21 Andrea [bella eats] December 18, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I started my blog as a personal diary to keep me accountable for my daily eats, after having been introduced to the blog world by YOU!!! I owe my readership to you too, because you kindly posted about my blog on your own and my daily activity jumped from like 2 to 600 in one day! It fell back down, but has slowly climbed since and I know I have you to thank for that initial start! πŸ™‚

I read yours because you’re funny, interesting and inspiring. Not only did you get me into food blogging but you also inspired me to try running again after a 6 month hiatus. Yay!

I still struggle with where my blog is going and what I want it to be but am excited to see how it grows and changes and will continue to be inspired by great blogs like yours!

22 Alexia December 18, 2008 at 9:18 pm

I was on the weight watchers boards one day. I usually read the boards to get ideas, etc. and I saw this lady post about food blogs and I was like what the heck is that so I clicked on the title opened the message and she said her two favorites were carrots n cake and kath eats real food. Wondering what this was I went to the site and I was instantly hooked. I was reading theirs daily and I couldn’t get enough so I started reading other peoples that they “followed”. I had a few daily blogs I read and a few every other day blogs. It became an obsession of mine. I read them any chance I got. A few months into reading I thought it would be a great idea of me to start one to kinda hold myself accountable for what I ate. I had a bad relationship with food (Exactly what Caitlin says in her “about me”. When I read it I was like did I write that) and I thought it might help me. I told myself no I can;t do that. No one would support me and everyone will think I am crazy for taking pictures of my food and writing about it. About a month later after not ever getting it out of my head I sat down with my husband and explained to him my wishes. Without a thought he said he thought it was a great idea and to go for it. I was in shock. That’s how I got started.

I didn’t think it would be as time consuming as it is. I wish I was better at blogging but really I do it for myself. I would love others to read it and get ideas, etc but I started it for myself and continue to do it for myself.

I found you through Jenna and I really love reading your blog. We are close to the same age if not the same age and I think you are a great person. You always have yummy foods and interesting stuff to say. πŸ™‚

Have a wonderful night!

23 Hangry Pants December 18, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I just clicked on your old blog – interesting! I am glad you stuck with it and gave it another attempt.

My short story is that I read food blogs, Mark wanted to try eating no meat for a month and … voila. Hangry Pants was born. πŸ˜€

24 Hangry Pants December 18, 2008 at 9:22 pm

I didn’t mean interesting in a weird way – actually interesting.

25 Melissa S. December 18, 2008 at 9:26 pm

dude, i read your blog cause you rock; and you come up with the greatest recipes (um, hellooooo…you’ve won what, THREE BSI’s?! so jealous!).

i actually started my blog in january of this year for a few months and then stopped for two when i got into a pretty serious relationship. I started it off because I thought it was going to be fun and would find some new friends. I also thought it was going to help me gain a better perspective about eating and my relationship with food as i’ve been trying to gain control of my ed for so long. yeah…but then i started it up again after i had a really bad relapse from a bad bad breakup. oh joy.

26 laughinglindsay December 18, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I actually was so inspired between you, Jenna and Caitlin to start my own blog. I just recently began, but I have a journalism degree, so writing was a love of mine from when I was little. So far, I love it. It has already changed me. Just today Caitlin inspired a huge goal for me. Check it out:

27 Aggie December 18, 2008 at 9:30 pm

I’m not sure why I started blogging… I discovered a cooking blog and I guess it opened up a new world for me. I am a stay at home mom and I felt like I needed something for me…so that’s what happened. I love the blogging community! I recently thought about starting a more healthy living/food blog, but not sure if I’ll be able to keep up with it.

I just started visiting your blog and I love it!! I keep hearing about you from Catilin, Itzy and others! πŸ™‚

28 Justy2003 December 18, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I don’t have my own blog (not sure where I’d find the time…I don’t know how you all do it!) but I do read them every day. I started out with Cristin’s EatLikeMe blog, then found Kath’s, then Jenna’s, then they all sort of exploded all over the internet! I have a certain few that I always read, and it’s almost like a little story for each of them and I enjoy reading not only about the food, but their lives as well!
I found yours through Caitlin’s and one of the reasons I keep coming back is to get some inspiration for running. I got more into running over the summer and I love the passion you have for it! Definitely inspiring!

29 Julie December 19, 2008 at 12:03 pm

My story is the same as Justy2003 – I was reading eatlikeme on Self.com and people were talking about this Jenna person and Kath’s blog…so I did some investigating and got hooked on those two blogs…and through them found Caitlin and you, and now I read all 4 all the time!

I agree with the others – I keep coming back because you all are so genuine and real…and the recipes are great, the foods you eat are inspiring, and your running is awesome. It hasn’t gotten me moving yet since it’s winter and I don’t have a gym membership either, but….I love to read the blogs at work when I’m bored and at home to make sure I’m not missing anything!

Question for you – what makes a good reader? I’ve been reading for a long time, but I rarely comment. Do you guys make money off the comments? I feel like commenting would just add another line re-stating what everyone above me has already said….but if it helps financially, I could do it…I just don’t chime in unless I have something original to say! πŸ™‚

30 Meghann December 19, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Julie that is too sweet of you! We don’t get paid per commenter, but I do get paid by impression so if you want to keep refreshing my blog at your work that would be awesome. πŸ™‚

I think a good reader is one that keeps reading. The comments are nice just to let me know that you are out and my message is hitting someone. Commenting is all up to you. πŸ™‚

31 Erin December 19, 2008 at 1:42 pm

I read your blog because I love it! I think you’re so cute and smart! I admire your running skills and culinary creativity. πŸ™‚ I started a blog because Andrea decided we would. πŸ˜‰

32 Elina December 20, 2008 at 11:52 am

Hi Meghann, that’s so funny that you brought up this topic of starting a food blog. I’ve been re-evaluating my reasons for starting my own blog (I did it because I was cooking fun foods that I wanted to share with others – mostly my sister). I’m still struggling sometimes with how to make my blog interesting to others. I know my sister and friends know me so my rambling makes sense to them, but to other people it’s probably boring… i don’t know. What did you learn from your last blog experience. What are you make-it or break-it blog thoughts?
I love your blog! I think you come up with really creative meals… and your weight loss story + current running improvements are just so motivating!

33 Meganerd July 1, 2009 at 10:50 am

Hey Meghann!

I’m bored so I took your suggestion of going back and reading your old posts πŸ˜€ LOL

I figured I would comment because (besides Lindsey’s who I knew in real life) your blog was the first one I ever read. I would check it every day when I was bored at school!

I think the reason I kept coming back was because at the time I started reading you were just starting to train for a marathon (something I have always wanted to do). I remember thinking that we had alot in common and it was interesting to see how you were training/fueling and watching your improvements. I always looked up to your determination!

Anyways, now that we met in real life I’m happy to say you are just as cool off the blog! lol.

Ok, anyways…. Have a great day!

34 Kyle February 24, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Meghann,

I know this post is super-old, but just wanted to say that I have been a lurker for, ahem, SEVERAL months now, and I really enjoy reading about your healthy lifestyle – it’s so inspiring to see that other people are interested in living the way I want to!

To that end, I finally started my own food blog, thanks to being so inspired, mostly by you, Kath, and Jenna – I feel like I know you! Did you ever write a post about what YOU think makes a great blog, and what you like to read about in others’ blogs? I’d be really curious about that!

Kyle πŸ™‚

hey girl –
i just stumbled on your blog and i love it! your outlook on moderation, fitness, and nutrition is so refreshing. i look forward to following you!

ps – congrats on your before&after pictures! isn’t running addictive?
