$1 Ab Ball

by Meghann on October 9, 2008

How many of you have seen the infomercials for the Bender Ball? For those of you who have not, the Bender Ball is a small squishy ball that you use to assist your self in crunches to give a full range of motion. I am a TV junkie so I see these commercials all the time and as great as these products always sound I am always to cheap/ stubborn to shell out all the dough to purchase the product in hopes that it will work.

My cousin, Angela, saw these commercials and didn’t see an expensive product that she would shell out tons of cash for, instead she saw the commercial and saw the resemblance of her 5 year old nephew’s Spiderman Ball. She substituted the Spiderman Ball for the Bender Ball in her crunches and discovered a whole new way to burn the abs.

So, without further adieu let me present to you my $1 Ab Ball.

I found this little baby at the Wal-Mart down the street for $1! Angela always raves about her work outs with the Spiderman Ball so I figured I would give it a shot with the pretty blue version of the ball (note the actual Spiderman Ball was $3 instead of the $1 I paid for the plain blueJ). On my quest for decent Abs by Halloween I am crossing my fingers that this ball will guide me along the way.

I am going to attempt to show you some of the moves Angela told me to do with the ball. I tried to google some moves from the ‘Bender Method’ but they must have those copyrights down tight because I found nothing. You will have to bear with me as I attempt to learn the dynamics of this little ball myself. (This is also my first attempt at photographing myself exercising… not very pretty

Please note I was dealing with this while I was trying to take pictures…

Actually I deal with that every morning I try to do crunches. She thinks when ever I’m on the floor it’s time to play. Does anyone else have this problem with their dogs?

1) Regular Sit Up

First up is the normal sit up. I placed the ball in the small of my back and started at an up right position. I then went back until I almost hit the ground and came back up. It’s almost like doing a sit up in the reverse direction. This is where the full range of motion comes in that they advertise in the videos. I could definitely felt these working right away. I did 2 sets of 25.

2) Reverse Crunch

Next up is the reverse crunch for the lower abs. I put the ball at the small of my back again so that my booty area and legs were elevated elevated. I brought my legs to a vertical position and then slowly bring them to the ground to the point where they are almost touching. These were a bit harder then the regular sit up, but I could still really feel it working. I did 2 sets of 25.

3) Side Crunch

These were a little difficult to maneuver due to the wobbling of the ball. I placed the ball in under my side and crunched over the ball until I almost hit the ground. These were a bit tricky to master but once I got the hang of it I could feel it working my obliques. I did 2 sets of 25 on each side.

Those are the three crunches with the ball that I was actually able to take pictures of this morning. I did play around with the ball a little more and was testing out some other moves that I think will work. The ball is still new to me, but I think it has potential to help me sculpt some great abs. It’s always fun to try to incorporate something new into my work out routines.

I will be sure to let you guys know what other ab moves I find works best with the ball and if I am sore in the morning or not. Thanks to my cousin Angela for the fabulous idea with the substitute ball. J

Before my fun with the ball this morning, I did an easy 30 minute run around my apartment complex. I just kind of weaved in and around my complex so I’m not sure of the exact distance I did.

For breakfast I used the last of my bag of Kashi H2H, ½ cup of Kashi Go Lean Crunch, 1 Plum and 3 spoonfuls of Applesauce for my wonderful cereal creation.

It was a nice refreshing breakfast after a pretty warm morning. Unfortuatnely, the rest of my meals today will be spent eating out. Which is bad because it requires $$ and unhealthy food choices, but good because I like spending time with all of the people I am eating with! Since my supervisor had a webinar yesterday, we are going out to celebrate her birthday at lunch today and then for dinner; out of town blogger, Jordan, is joining Caitlin and I downtown for an Orlando get together. Should be a fun day!

Hehe…I’ve always loved the name Bender Ball…wonder why? 😉 But every time I see the infomercial I totally want it! Thanks for the review and the hint on how to get the ball without paying a ridiculous price — I think I’ll pick one up next time I’m at Wal-mart or Target!

I’ve been looking everywhere for a cheaper alternative to the Bender Ball, and I find this. Perfect!
And for anyone wondering, while the Bender Ball isn’t terribly expensive, once you order it from them, they automatically sign you up for a monthly subscription. I’d certainly rather go spend a buck at Walmart.
Thanks for the great info!

PS… My dog does the same thing, and he’s BIG.
