I Remembered Why I Run in the Mornings

by Meghann on October 1, 2008

Tonight was perfect weather for an early evening run.

The weather was crisp, the sun was setting and the path around the lake was full of fellow runners, walkers and puppy dogs. Perfect.

I will have to admit though that after work I was tired, hungry and not wanting to run. If it wasn’t for Caitlin I wouldn’t have made it out there. But, once I was actually on the path and my legs were moving I felt at peace. This experience definitely made me remember why I run in the morning. If I always left it up to running in the afternoon I would always be making up excuses for myself. In the morning I feel refreshed and ready to move, I rarely give myself an excuse not to run.

However, I’m always willing to change up my routine for a nice after work run with a friend. Nothing like getting a little gossiping and catching up out of the way while getting the exercise in. :)

We did an easy pace for five laps around the lake and then walked an extra to watch the beautiful sun set and catch a glimpse of all of our surroundings.

I came really close to moving to downtown when I came here, but in the end it was too expensive. Maybe one day :)

Before my run I tried to plan out a small and a large afternoon snack so I would be nice and fueled.

Around 3:00 I had this yummy Apple fruit leather strip.

Then just before 5:00 I planned for this Ginger Snap Larabar

This however put a little hole in my plan. I should never rely on a new bar when I am trying to keep hunger at bay. The Ginger Snap was not good at all. The ginger flavor was WAY to strong and as much as I tried to force it down I couldn’t and barely ate half of it before tossing it out. It left such a bad everlasting taste in my mouth that I had to run the office candy bowl and grab some mints. This bar was YUCK I would not recommend this.

Considering my poor choice in prerun snack I was starving about half way through my run. Everyone kept walking by with Ice Cream and I promise if I had cash on me I would have instantly bought one as well. I really, really wanted Ice Cream!

Instead of ice cream for dinner (which I would have been perfectly happy with!) I, instead, heated up leftovers from last night’s dinner (Veggie Enchiladas) as soon as I walked through the door.

I know its not too exciting but boy was it good. And I was able to successfully remove three WHOLE enchiladas from the pan :) On the side I also had the last bit of black beans. Yum!

For dessert I finally got my Ice Cream :)

I dug into my stash of 100 calorie Klondike Ice Cream sandwiches and that seemed to sure cure my craving :)

For any Tea Lovers out there, Biz at The Biggest Diabetic Loser is having a little give away contest for Bigelow Green Days. Just comment on this entry on what your favorite tea is and she will draw a random winner tomorrow. Good Luck everyone I know I have my fingers crossed.

Alright, I need a shower. Good night everyone!

My Favorite Combination

by Meghann on October 1, 2008

One of the reasons I started reading all the healthy food blogs out there is because of the great ideas everyone has on how to interestingly and tastily pair food up together. One of my favorite blog discoveries over the past year has been the combination of Sweet Potato and Black Beans. I don’t know how I lived without the melding of these flavors in the past! For anyone who hasn’t tried the combination yet I HIGHLY recommend you hop on this bandwagon fast because it’s definitely worth the ride.

What’s your favorite thing you have discovered in your blog readings?

When I was making my dinner last night and knew I would have some left over black beans I instantly knew I wanted to pair it with sweet potato.

For a quick and easy lunch I simply micowaved the small sweet potato for five minutes and topped it with the left over black beans and banana peppers.

On the side I had some left over squash with hummus and the last 10 or so of my organic wheat crackers.

I actually had not had this combination in a while and will not be making that mistake again. J

When my stomach started to talk to me around 10 this morning I snacked on this peach.

This peach was ok, it was sort of half ripe/ half not quite ripe. It could have used another day or so on the counter.

After lunch I snuck a small pumpkin oatmeal cookie into my mouth.

You’re probably getting tired of looking at these so let me assure you there are only 4 left. Which means I will have ate the entire batch of cookies on my own. :-/ Good thing I halved the recipe, I don’t know what I would do if I still had a couple dozen cookies left. I would be a very happy (couple of pounds heavier) girl.

After not running yesterday and again this morning I am itching to run. Luckily Caitlin has agreed to meet me downtown for a gorgeous run around Lake Eola. This will be the first time I will be running in the afternoon instead of the morning time since April (wow! I guess thatt’s a lot of getting up at 5:30am) I’m interested to see how my body reacts to the change in time.

Wish me luck!
