A Lazy Dog Afternoon

by Meghann on September 14, 2008

The rest of my Sunday just flew by. I opted to just sit in front of the TV and watch the second disk to the second season of Dexter for the afternoon. I never veg out in front of the TV, so It was nice and relaxing.

I had a craving for something sweet and refreshing around 3:00 so I opted for a short trip to Tropical Smoothie.

I ordered the Sunrise Sunset with no sugar and no splenda. It’s made up of mangos, strawberries, oranges and pineapples; basically all of my favorite fruits in a cup.

On the side I had a cup of Kashi Go Lean cereal just for a little crunch to enjoy with my smoothie.

A couple of weeks ago I saw Kath make a Smoky Black Bean soup. I had half opened cans of both black beans and refried beans, so I decided to give it a shot. I did make a couple of slight alterations to the recipe.

·         I left out the green peppers (not a fan)

·         Added a sweet potato (yum)

·         Added some left over mushrooms I saw in the fridge and thought would make a good addition.

 The end result was delicious.

I had a small amount of plain fat free yogurt left over from a smoothie I made last week so I decided to try it as a topping on the soup. I am not a fan of the taste of yogurt so I try to find ways to incorporate it into my meals to still get all the benefits from the yogurt. As a topping, the yogurt complimented the soup perfectly, almost like sour cream would have. I will definitely remember this for the future.

On the side I had my last piece of whole wheat oatmeal bread. Which is sad I’m really going to miss that bread. I also broke out the pomegranate sparkling water I got today at Fresh Market.

The pomegranate flavor was a little strong, but still very good. I would probably buy the flavor again.

For dessert I decided to try this 100 calorie Peanut Butter Brownie I got from Publix last week. It was nice a chewy like a brownie should be. I was sad to discover that the peanut butter flavor was not as strong as I was hoping. Oh well, it was still good for a so called ‘healthy’ brownie.

I will definitely be calling it an early night tonight to rest up for another exciting week ahead. J

Sleep Tight.

First Watch

by Meghann on September 14, 2008

I love Sundays. I know it’s the last day of the weekend, but for some reason I always feel more relaxed on Sundays then I do on Saturdays. So far, today has been a perfect Sunday. I woke up nice and early to meet Caitlin for our 8.0 mile run.

Before my run I tried the Cherry Pie Larabar. I had a couple of bites of it and promptly threw the rest away. It was way too sweet for me.

So instead I had a piece of my homemade Whole Wheat Oatmeal bread with a smear of Almond Butter. Much better.

I met Caitlin at the head of the Wekiva Trail. This is a great shaded trail; it even has mile markers so you know exactly how far you’ve gone. The whole trail is 14 miles long, but we just made it to the 4.0 mile marker and turned around.

At the turn around point we decided to try a chocolate power gel pack since we both knew we needed a little extra something for the long run. We both had half the pack, and we both ended up spitting out our half of the pack. It was awful! It tasted like melted chocolate, which is not something you want to consume in the middle of a long run. Thank god for Caitlin’s camelback pack giving us the ability to wash the awful taste out of my mouth. We both decided we were going to try the Luna gummy energy boosts instead. I think it will make more sense to have that in a middle of a hot run.

Today I also set out to set a new personal distance record.  In the past the longest run I’ve done has been just over 6 miles. But today, I can happily say I completed the 8 mile run in an hour and a half! I felt great afterwards and could definitely see myself going that extra distance for my 15k in a couple of weeks!

After the run and a quick shower, Caitlin and I met up with my Dad and headed over to First Watch for a late breakfast. I discovered First Watch on Fittenesia’s blog and have been dying to try it.

When we arrived at First Watch there was a bit of a wait, so we headed next door to Starbucks for a little post run pick me up to hold us over until we could get fuel from food.

I’m not much of a coffee drinker, but I am obsessed with tea! I ordered the large (I forget what Starbuck’s version of large is) Iced Green Tea, unsweetened.

While at the counter we noticed the free sample of coffee cake, and who am I to resist a free sample of coffee cake? It was soo good! I am definitely a huge fan of coffee cake.

Now, let me tell you First Watch was everything I was hoping for. They have a great menu with a lot of healthy choices.

I ordered the Healthy Turkey Omlette, an egg white omelette with diced turkey, spinach, feta cheese, diced onions and tomatoes. Served with fresh tomato slices and a dry English muffin (no butter)

On the side I also got this fabulous bowl of fresh fruit. Breakfast is never complete without fresh fruit.

I can’t wait to try this restaurant again. My meal was fabulous and the bites I had of Caitlin’s French Toast and my Dad’s pancakes were equally as delicious.

After breakfast my dad and I hit up Fresh Market on the way home. I love going to fun grocery stories and searching for interesting finds.

As you can see I walked away with quite a few goodies. I am obsessed with Rachel Ray and she always uses the tomato paste in the tube, so I was very excited to find this on the shelf, alongside that I found sundried tomatoes not swimming in oil. I also found some interesting fruit that I can’t wait to try and will give you the full report on later.

For now I’m going enjoy the rest of my Sunday relaxing by the pool or in front of the tv. Decisions, Decisions.

Orlando Magical Dining

September 14, 2008

During the month of September Orlando does a Magical Dining experience. It’s this cool thing where you can go to all these fancy restaurants in Orlando, select a 3 course meal from a specified menu and only pay $29. I mentioned this idea to my Dad and he spread the word to a couple of more »
